I realise few people are using true VGA at the minute. I am currently running a Toshiba e800/W2003SE/SE_VGA.
The extra real estate on the maps side is great, but of course you are then faced with miniscule font sizes, barely readable.
I have tried the patch that that's part of Tweaks2K, but Navigon does not seem affected by that. I am guessing therefore that the fonts are controlled as part of the program coding and not scalable manually - Small/Medium/Large/Extra Large such as you see in some programs.
So, my question is, has anyone, who runs this program in VGA found a way to get an increased font size?? |

gpspassion - I have ran is in SE but the maps do not give me enough real estate. I drive in London a lot and a combination of the trafic/speed/closeness of the roads/MN4 BT GPS Drag makes it difficult trying to pay attention to it all.
I find that having better graphics is ideal if only the street names on the map were bigger.
etxegarraia - I have got a copy of mini4inis 2.1 and found several skins and layouts, but still cannot find a way to change the map fonts. Obviously my not speaking German makes it a little difficult to figure out the instructions, but I have a translation program that gives me the idea. I have managed to alter my screens, the layouts of icons, but still cannot change the actual street names as they appear on the maps.
Anyone help me out here please???? |

Hello OhBuggerit
Another Topic at : http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11791&whichpage=2
scroll down this page #2 and have a look of brilliant screens captures of the Level0.mpl changes made by Hirni (In germany)
I personaly have adopted the 3rd one with the grenn-light blue route indicator.
Level0.mpl files are not into your PPC, nor are they with the main Navigon programm. They are part of map files on your storage card.
Suggest you copy first the original Level0 file on the desk to have a security backup just in case of. then using MicrosoftSync copy from the PC and paste to the storage card Map/Country folder to replace the previous one.
You may reverse the process with the saved file on your desk.

Dont realy confirm this will change the font size on map. Better see www.navigating.de fora, ad ask question to Hirni who is the creator of layouts.
What I know, is that font size and fonts can be changed into the appropriates .ini files using Mini4inis, and even into Level0 files.
I dont have tested font size changes, but I will certainly do.

Back to you, vectorial cartography for MN4 is made by NAVTEQ.
I dont think that Navteq names data base in cartography, will obey to the normal font size procedure as this data base is inside the main mapping program.
What we can do with .mpl files is by changing the value of items, change colors, line sharpening, text fonts, size and many others undiscovered tricks.
In germany, they have a pretty great advance and knowledge on this, I am just starting using German feedbacks.

gpspassion - There is lots of difference in the scale of the map under 2003+MyVGA and 2003SE. I think anyone else trying the same would see a whole world of difference.
etxegarraia - Thank you for your information and help. I have managed to get hold of a copy of mini2inis 2.1 with the M4ilevelzero.txt which contains the information about the .mpl files. I have tried as you suggested to make changes to various items to see if it works, but my Level0.mpl remains unaltered.
Would you know if there is an isue with the mini4inis and the M4ilevelzero.txt being in German, and using German database references, when all of my software and .mpl files are in English?
I will have a good look at navigating.de as well and see if I can figure it out. |

UPDATE: Got almost evrything working how I want it. I have mini4inis 2.1 running and can alter my level0.mpl to change colours etc.
I can increase the font size of Town/City/District names to appear nice and big even when zoomed out at maximum.
I still cannot alter the size of the street names.
I think it may be to do with the street name font and sizes being directly linked to the Win2003 operating system. If I change my system font to Comic Sans then my map fonts in MN4 change to Comic Sans as well. Not a real problem.
BUT, I think that the font size for street names is set to scale with the map, if you zoom the map inwards (maximum) the street line widths get bigger and the font sizes decrease. When you zoom out the streets get smaler and the font gets bigger. I guess it has something to do with an aspect ration setting somewhere. |

OhBuggerit Many thanks for this nice feedback with Mini4Inis 2.1 level0.mpl tests you done.
Unfortunately I dont speak German at all, you can have infos in thsi forum : http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11791 and you may post to Suppengrün who is a German Member of GpsPassion (The guy who created Mini4Inis)
Or this :http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11665 contains the Mini4inis tutorial.
Some of these members are English/German speaking (French also indeed, but not Basque wich is my mother language) and they may be of some help.

To "alter" your Level0.mpl file
1- Copy from your PPC Storage card / Map directory any Level0.mpl file to your desktop. (For security backup). 2- Make mini4inis modif as approriate or pick-up a pre created level0 file from Hirni or others. 3- Copy such file to your storage card into the same directory where the original level0 file was or is. 4- This will replace the old file by a new file.
Then your Level0.mpl old file is "altered".
