I have a Garmin 350 and am mostly happy with it. I'm looking for a replacement/addition to solve the glaring missing feature that it has: no custom routes.

I started looking for a Garmin that supported custom routes, but I read here that even the "fixed" behaviour is quite suboptimal:

http://www.cgtk.co.uk/navigation/gpx

From that, it seems that when you go off-route, you get to choose between it discarding your route completely, and having to manually find your way back on to the route (or if you have the unfixed software, just getting diverted backwards to the original point you missed). I think what I want it to do instead is something like "automatically route to next convenient point *in the direction of travel*". i.e. I want the GPS to tell me where to go, and I don't want to go backwards. Doesn't sound like a huge ask, does it?

What are some choices? Are there any???

Other wants:

* some way to import routes over a non-proprietary protocol, like USB mass storage. I don't have windows or a mac.
* cheap is good -- ideally, available on ebay.co.uk
* small, thin, lightweight -- the nuvi 350 is great like this, and the wide screen models a bit of a step backwards (but if it has to be fat or widescreen, so be it)
