For the past one month I struggled to solve the problem of my Garmin GPS 750 going in to data mode ( Computer icon popping up) when ever I used to connect the mini USB charging unit---whether I connect to the Laptop OR in the car.
The solution is simple.
1. Connect the GPS to the charger---let the Computer Icon pop up.
2. Now disconnect the charger from the GPS.
3. The GPS screen will show a white band and a green color line inside it loading.
4. After the green line is fully loaded, then Loading maps will come on the screen--NOW YOU RECONNECT THE CHARGER.
5. Garmin will boot properly with the Audio/voice.----Battery will also charge.

Cheers to you all.

Having a possibly related issue. I use my 1490 on my motorcycle. When I start out, everything is fine, but at random intervals, the device reverts to data link mode (computer icon). Then, after 10-15 seconds it resets to start-up, loading maps, "do you agree", then back to map view with route.

I think this is related to power. I believe if the cigarette plug loses contact, the device wees the mini USB as a data link, not a power link. To test this, I disconnected the cable completely for the 1hr + return, and no re-occurrence. I will not check the fit of the cigarette lighter style power plug, and see if I can resolve.
