Long time lurker first time poster.

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT about a year ago and I currently have City Navigator Europe NT 2012.20 map installed. I have been trying for weeks to update my map to the latest version and I am being asked to pay for the update, why is that?

One of the reasons I specifically bought this unit is because of the lifetime map update feature. Can some enlighten me please.

How are you trying to download the map? Did you create an account at garmin.com? Have you logged into that account and does it list your 1490 against the account?

Did you buy the 1490LMT as a new or Garmin refurbished unit? If so, your lifetime map subscription should be honored by Garmin. I would contact Garmin support and if you have your sales receipt, they should be able to get the problem resolved for you.

If you bought a used nuvi LMT model and it has been registered by a previous owner, the lifetime map subscription does not transfer to a new owner. If that is the case, you will need to purchase a map update subscription if you want lifetime updates.

This unit was bought new from an authorized Garmin dealer (FNAC) and was registered with Garmin. I still have my receipt and Garmin has all my info on My Garmin.

I've updated the unit several times over the past year without problem but this time I'm being asked to buy the upgrade. I've emailed Garmin but have not received a response as yet.

Sounds like a problem on the account then. Try calling Garmin ... it'll be quicker. They're pretty good at sorting things like that out.

After you log in to your Garmin account do you attempt to downlaod the map through My Dashboard or My Maps. (My Dashbaord sometimes creates problems)

I suggest using the My Maps tab. You should see your 1490LMT listed there.
It should be listed as 1490LMT not 1490. There will be two fields you can check, Details & Download. If the model # is incorrect or the Download option is missing there is a problem with your account with Garmin.

I'm away from home for the next few days and don't have the unit with me so I can't check it against the info in the account, but I have checked it several times in the past weeks and everything seemed fine; model and serial numbers were correct.

I usually use My Maps to update and when I checked a few minutes ago the unit was listed there as a 1490LMT with the "Free lifetime map updates" sticker on the unit.

I'm a little confused on the circumstances you state.

"I bought a Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT about a year ago and I currently have City Navigator Europe NT 2012.20 map installed".

"I've updated the unit several times over the past year without problem but this time I'm being asked to buy the upgrade."

If you have updated the 1490 sveral times in the past year the 2012.20 map on the unit does not indicate that.
By chance could these updates occurred more than a year ago?
Perhaps something went wrong when you registered the unit and you only received a free update that is good for 90 days. If the timing is right you possibly could get two free updates in that 90 day period.

Best advise is to call Garmin and get it straightened out.

My receipt shows that I bought the unit on July 25 2011 so it couldn't have been more than a year ago. I'm also pretty sure I've updated the maps at least three times...when the unit was firs registered and at least two other times.

That doesn't make sense if you say you updated the unit 3 times and the map you are displaying is 2012.20. Are you sure that is the map version on the unit?
If it is, then some of the updates you performed did not update the map.
