I have a nuvi 255 that has died. Any recomendations for a new gps unit that will be used mostly in the USA and once or twice a year in Europe?
Thanks, John

Welcome to our forum John.

You some choices depending on how you'd like to use your Nuvi over time. First there are some Nuvi models that come with both North America and Europe maps preinstalled. These models would include any model where the model number ends in 70 or 75. The only current models that would qualify are the 2475LT or 2370LT. In addition you could also find older models like the 770 or 775.

The other option is to purchase any of the current Nuvi models that meet your needs for use in the US and then add Europe maps by purchasing them separately on an SD card or by DVD.

I had a good luck with my 755T. I used it successfully in Mexico, US and Europe (I put EU map on SD card)

Thank you Lac, hopefully the 755T will turn out to be budget friendly.

The 7xx line is now discontinued so finding one may be the hardest part. The 7x5 series was probably the best Nuvi series to date as far as features are concerned. If you can find a new or refurbished one from an authorized Garman dealer, I'm sure the price will be good.

Only deals I found on a 7xx is for a used 765t. Less than $120 delivered. I have one I bought refurbished and it works and looks great. I would need European maps, however.

Here's a new 1370 for $155. It has both types of maps. You only get one update on each, however. It could get pricey to keep both US and Europe up-to-date.

Greetings !

I travel between USA and Europe often. Last time a week ago on a roadtrip between San Francisco and Seattle. And I use the Nuvi 2475 with 100 % succes. In fact, I cant live without it. It saves me several hours EVERY day on the roads in USA and Europe. The only thing to think about is that when you fire it up on a new continent it takes several minutes before it figures out where it is. I love the Nuvi 2475. And the traffic-reciever works on both continents. I also bought the GTM 60 HD reciver to get rid of the ads and that works perfect. The GTM 60 works with 100 % succes on both continents together with the Nuvi 2475. I also have the 1370T and that works with 100 % accuracy on both continents. I always bring it with me as a backup, but so far never had to use it. But I used it before I bought the new 2475 LT (But the GTM 60 does NOT work with the 1370) The old reciever that came with the 1370 works perfect but with small ads in the USA.

So to sum it all up.

The older 1370T with the original trafficreciever works perfectly well both in USA and Europe. (But it wont work with the new GTM 60 HD traffic-reciever). You will get small ads using the original traficreciever in the US, but no ads in Europe. You will se traffic both in the US and Europe with the original traffic-recievers.

The new Nuvi 2475 LT with the original trafficreciever works with 100 % accuracy both in Europe and in the USA. But you will see ads in the USA, not in europe. Buy the GTM 60 HD reciever and you will NOT see any ads in the USA or in Europe. The GTM 60 HD trafficreciever works perfectly well both in the USA and in Europe. No problems whatsoever.

The only thing with these 2 transatlantic Nuvi that sometimes give me just a little bit of headache is that the memory quickly fills up after a few mapupdates. I have solved that problem by just choosing western- europe and not installing eastern europe when i update the maps. Problem solved.

I would recommend you to buy the lifetime TRANS-ATLANTIC maps updates. Its not that expensive and you always have fresh maps.
I did not do that for my 1370 and i regret that today.
But I have bought it for my 2475 and that works perfectly well.
When you update the maps you will always have to first choose to update Europe OR USA and when that is finished choose the other continent and update that. You can NOT choose to update both at once.´

When you buy the unit you can only update ONE map free, not both.
Again - buy the lifetime trans-atlantic maps updates. (117 dollar - absolutely worth it)

Finally : I love both my Nuvi,s. They have completely changed my transatlantic travels. I really dont understand how I could live without them before :-)

Peter:

Thanks for the report. Just FYI, any GPS that travels more than 500 miles from where it got its last satellite lock will take extra time to get its next lock.
