Hey guys:
I have the Nuvi 770. There's not a lot of space left on my device. I would like to move either my USA map or my Europe map over to the SD. I formatted the sd and created a Garmin folder. I am not sure which file(s) to move over? Once done, I don't know how to let the garmin know I have an SD card in it I would like activated?
Thanks |

Make sure the card is formatted as FAT32 before you use it in your nuvi. Also, I would suggest you make a full backup of your nuvi (to your computer HD or flash drive) before you change anything.
Create a folder on the SD card named Garmin. The file you will want to move to the SD card will be in the \Garmin folder and should be named gmapsupp.img. Move this and any other file named gmapsupp.* (you might have a gmapsupp.unl and gmapsupp.gma) into the Garmin folder of SD card. When you reboot your nuvi, the map on SD should be recognized and loaded. |

Hey Alandb:
Thanks for the quick response. I have already backed up and I am ready to move the file over, however I don't have any file called 'gmapsupp.img or anything else gmapsupp.*? I do have a bunch of gmapprom.*, but no supp's??
Edit:
I do have a gmapsupp.img that I downloaded. Will that help? |

On the Nuvi, do you have a file called GMAPPROM.IMG and one called GMAPPROM1.IMG? If so one is probably the US maps and one the Europe maps, and no I don't know which is which . Anyhow, move either one of those files to the SD card as Alan notes, and once on the card, rename the file to GMAPSUPP.IMG

Do you have any other files with the .img extension other than gmapprom.img and gmapbmap.img? How large is your gmapprom.img file?
I am not sure how Garmin distributed the NA and Europe maps on the 770 unit. It is possible that they put it all in one gmapprom.img file. If that is the case, you would need to reinstall the maps and split into two separate images. If that is the case, I will let someone more knowledgable with the map installer and Mapsource answer your question.
Edit: I see Rick answered your question while I was typing ... ignore my post. |

Yes I have other files, should I move them all over as you had said earlier??
I have a gmapbmap.img, gmapbmap.sum, gmapprom.img, gmapprom.sum, gmapprom1.img, gmapprom1.sum and that's it.
I beleive the one I want to move over is the gmapprom1.img, so which other files, if any, should move as well if that's the one I want to move??? |

| The larger of the 2 gmapprom files will be the Europe maps. |

Ok it's moved. How can I pull up the Europe maps now to see if it worked??
It shows in Settings under Maps that my USA is still on the device but the Europe map is gone. |

| Just to check, you placed the gmapprom1.img file in the Garmin directory on the SD card and renamed it to gmapsupp.img? |

I don't think the .sum file should make any difference but you can take it off the Nuvi and put it on the SD card if you want to. It can't hurt.
Not sure what you mean by "change over to the SD card for the device to see it" but if there is data on the card that the Nuvi can use it should automatically see the card and use the data when the Nuvi boots up. |

| You said in your original post that you formatted the SD card. Make sure it is formatted as FAT32 and not NTFS. |

When I formatted the card it defaulted to fat32.
I copied the file over again to the card and don't ask me, but, it sees it now. So I think all is good.
I did try to put an address in for London, England and it tried to find it, but came back with "Not Enough Memory". Is that because I am in the US?? Just wondering.
Thanks for you help on all this!! |
