Yes, these new android tablets are little powerhouses. I have a new 10 inch model by Asus the TF 300. It is $100 more than this new Google tablet but it is also a 10" screen. It is a well-done tablet and should give an indication of how good this Google 7 inch tablet will be since Asus is making the tablet for Google.
I am not too excited about this tablet or my tablet as an in car navigation solution. Yes, it has a GPS but the lack of any kind of cellular connectivity means that your options are limited. You could run it on Wi-Fi with a MiFi if that configuration is available to you but that seems clunky in the car. If Garmin or TomTom ever released a real android app then it might get more interesting.
All of that being said, using Google maps or Google earth on these devices is a great experience, just not in the car. I've used both many times at home, at work, or on vacation to get directions, get walking instructions, find places to eat, etc. It works really well for that. |
Nav experience: Garmin SP III, SP 2710, SP 2730, Garmin i5, Garmin c330, Garmin 760, Garmin 885T, Dash Navigation, TeleNav for Sprint, TomTom 740 Live, CoPilot Live v8, Navigon for Android, Navigon for iPad, Google Navigation, Waze, Garmin Nuvi 3490LMT, Garmin 3590LMT, TomTom for Android, Rand McNally 7725LM |

I used a Garmin Nuvi 660 for several years. After getting my first Android phone, the LG Optimus V, and using Google Maps Navigation on the phone, I find it superior in every way over the Garmin device.
The Garmin was so slow/latent to track my location that it would issue directions often times AFTER I had already passed the turn. I never liked the Garmin maps, or user interface software. And the extra features such as MP3 player were inadequate.
The Google Maps Navigation is very fast and responsive and seems to have a level of intelligence far beyond that of the Garmin. And of course, the Google Maps are always up to date.
My only complaint is the small size of the screen on my phone. So I'm considering a 7" tablet mounted in portrait mode in place of the phone. I would use the 3G data connection on the phone and tether the 7" device for data.
I was considering the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" for a while but never was pleased with the pixel density of the screen. The Nexus 7 has 216 dpi which is much better.
I have not made any decision as of yet. I will wait for some more reviews/months before buying one. |

I've used two acer tablets for navigation, a 7" and a 10". The screens just don't compare to my garmin, not bright enough, and they have major glare. If my streetpilot7200 had a better screen resolution/refresh I'd still be using it. It could be just my tablets, but the gps isn't as accurate as my gps either. My issues with google maps are sometimes in rural areas they have dirt roads, or even 4x4 trails marked as a main road! Sometimes google marks new roads and highways that are still being built as open.
The traffic on google or waze is a good compliment to my garmin, but still can't replace it for me. +1 on what jeffcarp said about using google for getting directions and finding places to eat. |
