Garmin has released a firmware update for the 7x0 series (not 765, for ex.). Be aware that this update resets all prefs to default values. EDIT: on my 760 it reset a number of things, but not all. Favorites were not erased. It took a long time to get sat lock, but the unit had not been powered up in many weeks, so this may be normal.
Changes made from version 4.90 to 5.40: Fixed an error that caused devices with lengthy trip logs to shut down. Fixed an error that sometimes caused units to shut down after upgrading software. Important: This software update will restore user settings to default. Added support for a second map on an SD card. Fixed an error that caused the 'System > About' page to freeze. Added the ability to turn off continuous alerts for speed cameras Added a Troubleshoot button in the Bluetooth menu whenever Bluetooth is enabled Added a prompt to select a country for Address searches when using maps for other countries loaded from SD cards Corrected the handling of Address searches when using maps with and without multiple countries Corrected several routing-related issues Corrected several issues with the TourGuides Corrected POI dialing in Australia Corrected an issue where voice selections were lost when entering then leaving charging mode Corrected an issue where Find cities would not find cities whose names contain a diacritic 's' Improved Fleet Management protocol support and corrected some Fleet Management-related issues Improved Stability ----------------
Curious that Garmin makes no mention of v5.30 in the change log.

Amazing isn't it, that they keep releasing updates for long since discontinued models.
One word of caution on this one though and I don't know why Garmin does this but - I understand that this update is ONLY FOR THE 7X0 MODELS AND NOT THE 7X5, EVEN THOUGH THE TITLE READS 7XX. THIS UPDATE IS ONLY FOR THE 7X0 NUVI MODELS. |

I just tried to update my Nuvi 750 (5.30) using myDashboard found in the link above and it says no new software updates are available. I wonder what gives?
UPDATE: I just installed WebUpdater and it does see that 5.40 needs to be installed. Weird.

| Not sure the latest update will give any other problems to my 760, so would live with v4.90 for time being. Don't want to risk having an expensive paper weight. |

So far, so good on 5.40 I installed today. No hangs, no reboots. 5.30 was awful for this.

Yeah, apparently Garmin doesn't want to admit 5.30 existed [grin], but oddly enough I had no problems with it.
Haven't had time to test 5.40 yet, though everything worked fine as I went through and re-did the prefs.

Never tried 5.30 as I saw the problems being reported but 5.40 seems fine in my limited testing.
Dan, what preferences did you have to reset? I only had to select a Locale (country). As you reported, by Favorites were not deleted either. |

After I upgraded to 5.40, did not have to reset anything and it appears stable so far.

Locale, map detail, voice and avoidances all changed. I think [g]. Because the 760 is a spare these days, some may have been changed before the firmware update, but I'm quite sure about locale and voice.

| I think the notation that it "resets everything" is a bit overzealous. It probably really means you should do a hard-reset and restore your backup POI files and your custom configuration settings to make sure the device operates properly. I can't tell you how many times 5.30 froze up on me in the middle of a route or rebooted at certain map locales. I hope the combination of 5.40 update and doing a hard-reset will fix these problems as I'm not sure how to back-rev the device to 4.90 from my saved backups. |

Bob,
If you saved the GCD file which contains 4.90 you should be able to do it fairly easily. If memory serves me, you just copy that into the Garmin directory and reboot, but in case I've forgotten a crucial step, be sure to check first [g].

| If you think you need to "back-rev" your firmware just replace the gupdate.gcd file on your Nuvi with the one from your backup and reboot your Nuvi. On start up you'll probably get a message that your attempting to install firmware that's older than what is on your unit, but of course that's what you want to do, so just confirm. |

Upgraded the firmware on my Nuvi 750 today to 5.40 in conjunction with updating the maps to CN NA 2013.30. Afterward the Nuvi would stall at the first via point on route simulations. The magenta route line would look okay and the vehicle would advance okay to the first via point but then would just stop there. Tried simulating different routes with the same result. A master reset didn't resolve. Reverted back to 4.90 and all seems to be well now. Now to update the maps on my other 750.
