For a variety of reasons, I feel the need to replace my current GPS - a nuvi 750. However, the one feature that I am really going to miss on the 750 is the audio out jack. It appears that none of the new units come with audio out, but they all come with BT. I have some experience with BT, but not on a GPS.
A. Can I assume that I can pair the device with a BT headset and then hear the audio through that headset?
B. If I pair my GPS to a BT headset (or other BT receiver), will that shut off the sound for everyone else?
I'm hard of hearing and always depended on the audio out jack to route the audio either through the car's speakers or a mount that I have with a bigger speaker. The car radio doesn't have BT, and neither does the mount, so I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do before I buy any new unit.
Thanks in advance Tom |

I can't tell you off the top of my head which models do what functions with Bluetooth, so be very careful when shopping because merely having Bluetooth is not going to guarantee success for what you want.
I ride a motorcycle and have to have audio out. My old nuvi 760 had an audio out jack. It also has BT, but only for pairing with a cell phone. My new zumo 660 has the correct BT profile to talk to a helmet headset. I only know of one other Garmin GPS that has this and that nuvi model (765) is discontinued. Many have BT profiles that pair the GPS with a cell phone, but that will not get you navigation directions.
Maybe someone here has compiled a list or found a new model that does this, but as far as I know the zumo line is it. So no, do not assume this at all.

| One option maybe to limit your search for a new GPS to those models with a speaker in the mount. For example, I can only run my Nuvi 3790 at 50% of full volume when in the mount as anything more than that is simply to high a volume for inside the vehicle. I have to confess I'm not sure what models other than the 37xx line have this feature but I'd guess the 34xx and 35xx will, and maybe some of the 2xxx line. Hopefully someone here can confirm. |

Thanks for the info. It sounds like there is more to the BT issue than I expected.

| This has come up before so you might want to run a quick search on Bluetooth in the nuvi section but if memory serves, other than the zumos, only the 765 (is that the one you had in mind too Dan ?) could connect to a Bluetooth headset. The reason that was dropped on later models is likely due to the lack of support of MP3 or Audiobooks. |

I wear hearing aids that have BT connectivity. I had assumed that I could connect them to the GPS to help me hear, but it sounds like that may not be the case. I'm sure glad I checked things out before I bought!
Thanks everyone! |

I've been forced to learn a fair amount about BT "profiles" as I rigged up my bike, so if I can assist, let me know.
Do you happen to know which profile(s) your hearing aids support?

No, I don't know anything about the profile. Technically, the BT isn't in my hearing aids, but in a device that goes with them. That device has an induction coil that puts out a signal that my hearing aids can pick up.
The audiologist paired it with my phone. I figured that I'd take the GPS in so she could pair it with the device. Looks like that isn't going to work the way I had imagined.
I was hoping to be able to move to a newer device with the new features and wider screen. But at this point, I think I may just buy updated maps for my old nuvi 750. It has audio-out, which makes BT unnecessary. |
