Bought a refurb'd 775T last year, got free updated maps and used it in Italy.
Now this year, I'm in Italy again and the Nuvi fails to calculate any routes "Cannot Calculate Routes."
I've tried Favorites that worked last year, I've tried using the POIs that came with it, I've tried entering GPS coordinates and it's the same thing.
So I connect it to my MacBook Pro, log into myGarmin. It tells me there's a mandatory update to fix an issue where it tries to repeatedly update firmware or not acquire satellites.
I do the update, re-connect as instructed and myGarmin dashboard and it keeps prompting me to update. I've updated 2 or 3 times and it's in the state that it's suppose to address.
So I tried mySupport and it prompts me to enter my model but Nuvi 775T is not accepted as a model.
I boot it up and there's no map, though the satellites are all acquired. It can position my POIs on a map but it can't determine how to get to it from the current location.
Is this a way for them to get me to update maps? I Googled the topic and I see in some cases the customers are offered a repair for $99, which wouldn't do me any good now. |

Have you tried re-installing the firmware using Web Updater on your MBP instead of the sometimes buggy dashboard method?

| You may also want to check that the maps didn't get deselected during the firmware update. If I recall correctly, to check that, go into Tools - Settings - Map - Map Info and make sure the entry for CN Europe has a tick mark beside it. If there is no entry for City Navigator Europe then you probably have lost the maps somehow. If the entry is there and you place a tick mark beside it, you should have your Europe maps back. |

Yes, a Hard Reset would be in order. Specific instruction for doing the reset can be found at:
http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=127932
but be sure when you are reading the procedures that you pay special attention to how to save your Favorites PRIOR to doing the reset and how to restore them on your Nuvi AFTER the reset. |

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I did check Maps Info and all my maps were checked. In fact, all the POIs show the surrounding areas on the map. In the map view, it would show my current location and the destination close by. But it wouldn't calculate.
A farther destinations for instance, it would calculate for awhile, showing the percentage going up but then at the end return the same Cannot Calculate the Route.
I thought of updating the maps again, because the Garmin Map Update app. took a real long times I recall. So I ran that again and it's been downloading the map for about 4 hours, showing 3262 MB but only a quarter in the little dial that it uses as progress.
Not sure whether to kill the app. and then try the hard reset or let it go but that could be hours.
At this point, I may have to entertain getting an iPhone app. if I can find a car charger. I'm glad I didn't pay for the lifetime map updates because this process is suspect and now the reliability of Garmin is suspect. Apparently this has happened to others according to the Google search. |

Well the map updating process has been going for 20 hours now. Was over 12 hours that it was downloading and I fell asleep. Awoke to find out that the Garmin got unmounted from my MacBook Pro and the Garmin Map Update app. was prompting me to reconnect it.
But before I did, I checked it and I could calculate routes to the POIs and Favorites that it showed. However, there were no maps. No Euro maps at all and when I checked the Maps Info, it only listed the North American ones and they were unchecked.
Guess that is what it doesn't during the map update process, leave the unit in a state without any maps?
So I reconnected to my Mac and had it reinstall the Euro maps and that process is finishing up now though it's been about 2 hours.
Fingers crossed. |

Argh it uncounted the nuvi again, right in the last stages.
Now the map for Europe is on the nuvi but tried selecting some destinations and it got the "cannot calculate route" error.
So I restarted the reinstallation process. But I noticed in advanced options you can have it install to the nuvi, to the Mac or to both. I just chose the nuvi and see that in the install phase it's writing to the nuvi. Could see the amount of used and free space on the nuvi change a few bytes at a time.
Has anyone tried installing to computer and just dragging the map files over to the mounted nuvi? That can't be any slower than Garmin's Mac app.
Is it any better on Windows? |

Hmm it went from full dial around the "3" to now about half way. Presumably a different phase.
Disk usage is no longer updating on the Garmin's volume now.
It had gone from about half go 8 GB used to about 5.5 GB. Yet the North American maps aren't even active (installed but unchecked in Maps Info). |

Final resolution is that after several attempts I finally got a successful restore and after that was able to calculate routes normally. The whole process took well over 20 hours but I did have a very slow connection. However even in the install phase the throughput was very slow.
It may be that the map and other content consists of a large number of small files which would explain the slow disk IO. When I backed up the nuvi previously the Finder copy was slow too. |

I'm glad you got it to work. I've had similar frustrating experience trying to update with the lifetime updater program. I've removed it from my laptop and do not plan to use it again. Sometimes it works fine but I do not think I've ever gotten it to work on both my nuvis with lifetime maps for an upgrade. One or the other of them doesn't work, despite overnight trying, and I have to use the older routine. It always has worked so I think I will be time ahead to just skip the silly lifetime program - which never tells me there are maps available either - and just use the older method. (the lifetime updater is also hard to remove - another sign of a poorly written program)
