Can a Google route be imported into a Nuvi 1690 or 1450?

If so, how do I do it?

It's not an limitation of either of your Nuvi's but of Google Maps. You can import individual locations from Google Maps to your Nuvi but they removed the route export function at some point awhile back.

You can use either of Garmin's computer programs, Basecamp or Mapsource and you can also use the Internet based mapping site Mapquest which works much like Google Maps and DOES support the transfer of complete routes to the Nuvi.

Sending a route from MapQuest to my Nuvi 1690 does not appear to work correctly. My analysis is that the problem is MapQuest's, not Garmin's. MapQuest appears to be sending only the startpoint and endpoint of the route, not the waypoints. The reason that you would want to send a route from MapQuest in the first place, is that you want to force the GPS to follow your tweaked route, rather than to calculate a route from scratch based just on startpoint and endpoint.

For others reading this thread, who wish to experiment themselves, note that you will not see the MapQuest route immediately listed under "Routes" in your GPS. You will find it under "Tools" => "My Data" => "Import Route(s)". After you import the route, then you will also see it listed under "Routes". You can delete the imported route directly from the GPS: "Tools" => "My Data" => "Delete Selected Route(s)". However, to delete or view the MapQuest XML files (which does not affect the imported routes), you need to access them from your PC, in the "GPX" directory of the GPS. You can view the MapQuest XML file on your PC using NotePad (or a structured text editor of your choice).

Has the Gmap to GPX plugin stopped working? I haven't used it in a while but it used to create a nice GPX file from a Google map, which could then be checked in MapSource or BaseCamp and sent to your GPS.

If my Gmap you mean Google Maps, the SEND function in Google now only supports transferring of points as Favorites.

@dddiam, I haven't done this on my 3790 which uses Trip Planner yet, but sending a 5 waypoint route to my 760 from Mapquest results in all the waypoints appearing in the route, not just the start and end point. Granted the route I created got recalculated when Imported to the Nuvi but that is a normal happening. The same results should happen with your 1490 (can't speak for the 1690).

I found the various waypoints were present by selecting the route from Where To - Routes and then Edit - Add/Remove Points.

Here is a 5-waypoint MapQuest map:

Below is the .gpx file sent to my Nuvi 1690 from MapQuest.
(If you display it in a browser you will see the indented, color-coded XML structure).
Unless I am reading it wrong, I only see the start-point and end-point, not the waypoints.

Yet here is the one I sent to the 760 which , if I'm reading it corrently, shows all the waypoints I entered:

This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.

UPDATE- Just noticed what is probably the difference between the 2 routes. In my example all the points show on the Mapquest map as A - B - C - D, etc are entered as "destinations". While in yours the map is only showing 2 destinations, A and B, which are the start and end locations. If you make all the "dot" points into destinations in Mapquest (enter a physical address or co-ordinates, for example), my guess is they will appear as waypoints on the Nuvi route.

In Mapquest, I have found that you need to change all via points to "Stops" before you transfer the route to the nuvi. You can right click on each red dot, then select "Change to Stop" from the popup menu.

Thanks, that should do it. Does make turning those red dots into Destinations so they show up as waypoints on the Nuvi pretty easy.

dan, I assume you are referring to the GmaptoGPX browser plugin that converts a Google map route to GPX code. I have not used it for a long time either. I just tried it with my current browser (IE9) and my nuvi 755T. It seemed to run OK and generated the GPX code, but I couldn't get the nuvi to recognize it as an importable route. I don't remember how long ago I downloaded the plugin, but there is apparently something in the GPX code the nuvi doesn't like. I don't know enough about the GPX syntax to trouble shoot it.

Edit: I will take that back ... my nuvi did recognize it, but it turned my single route on the Google map into 3 routes to be imported named route0, route1 and route2. It created a separate route for each segment of the trip. That is why I didn't recognize it when I went to import it. It is almost like it was made for the Trip Planner, which my 755T doesn't have of course. I don't remember GmaptoGPX working this way before, but I only used it a time or two and that was a long time ago. So maybe that is the way it always worked.

@Rick: see Alan's reply. The plugin can be found here:

http://www.elsewhere.org/journal/gmaptogpx/

@Alan: Now that you mention it, I seem to recall having to edit out those lines in the GPX code to remove the "new route" tags (route0, 1, 2 etc) and of course the end tags that go with them. Then the file loads as one route.
