I was hijacking another thread so thought I would start yet another subject on failed map updates.

I tried the lifetime updater yesterday on my 370. It left me with a unit with nothing but the base map. So I tried using the map updater and it gets all most all the way through and then gives an error message that it must close. No tech support on weekends. Going on a trip Tuesday. Bad move on my part. I tried restoring the files from my hard drive but I get a message saying they are corrupt. Both of them. (I saved it in two places). I had the same problem when I bought it and downloaded the free update. Took me and tech support about a week that time. Any suggestions?

from NanaimoRick:
Have you attempted to use the map updater and under Install Options select "Download to Computer Only". If that download completes that way you will have a program called map install on your computer, in the Garmin directory. With the Nuvi connected to your PC, use the Mapinstall program to select the maps areas you want to load on your 370 and then let Mapinstall do the map installation for you.

I had some sucess with Rick's method above and was able to install the maps of my destination. That atually worked and was usable. Then I got greedy and tried to install enough areas to cover the whole trip. They installed but now I get a "cannot unlock maps" error. There is no gmapsupp.unl file. I don't know if there was one during the period that it worked as I didn't look. Guess I should have done a backup after each map area?

There is also no gmapprom.img file. There is a gmapprom.unl though at this point what map it may be for who knows.

Now none of my computers will recognize the device. So I guess it is time to put this thing on the shelf for a while and use paper maps on my trip. Maybe dig out my old GPSIII or IV and see if it still works with Topo USA.

I searched the forum and tried a few things but nothing seems to work. Thanks for the help here anyway.

I will e-mail Garmin support and see what they reply. Will it be "370?, are you kidding, thank you for calling and thank you for buying lifetime maps". Perhaps.

Sounds like you ran out of storage space and there just wasn't enough room to store the full map and the unlock file. If you can get it back to the point where the computer will recognize the device, you should be able to install the map (or portions of it) to an SD card. Hopefully Garmin support will be able to help you.

The e-mail option doesn't seem to be working. So I'll post it here.

Thank you for the offer. I just haven't had time to get back to this until now. So far Garmin tech support has been little help, referring me to their FAQs. I cannot call them during their business hours.

The issue with the computer recognizing the device appears to be the original USB cable I got with the device. I plug it in to the computer while it is not connected to the Nuvi I get the unrecognized device error. Using a different USB cable I can connect to the device.

Right clicking on the Nuvi storage I get the following stats
FAT 32
535M used
3.3G free
3.83G total

I just copied all the current files to my computer hard drive.

I have another backup I did in Feb 09.

The Nuvi will start, find satellites but I get a can't unlock maps error.

Using mapsource, I find that the CN North America NT 2013.10 has not been unlocked. I will try unlocking it and maybe reinstall it to the Nuvi?
