Using my Nuvi 755T I have set up a Custom Route from Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal to my Destination. This means I have to stop somewhere on the busy highway leaving the Ferry Terminal in order to activate my Custom Route. My Nuvi will ask if I want to double back to the Ferry Terminal which is the starting point of my Custom Route. Of course I'll refuse that option and choose to join up with my Custom Route from my stopover point on the highway.

I find that the 755T will tolerate a temporary interruption in satellite communication when going through a tunnel for example, or if satellite communication is cut off in a steep mountain pass. I could set up a Custom Route from my Home residence to my Destination. What would happen then is when I get on the ferry there is a very high probability that I will lose my satellite communication. The ferry crossing to Horseshoe Bay is about 40 minutes. My question is the following. Would the 755T treat this 40 minute interruption as a temporary interruption and pick up my custom route once I get off the ferry? If I could do this I would then avoid having to find a place to stop on the highway to activate my Custom Route from the ferry terminal to my destination.

I think most auto ferry routes are mapped on Garmin maps and should route unless you have the avoidance set for ferries. In any case they should track while you are enroute unless of course you are on the lower deck of the ferry where the satellite signal is blocked. And even in that case it should pick the tracking and route back up once you get signal.

Not sure why you feel the need to stop 'on the highway', I often use ferries and simply switch my nuvi on while waiting to disembark

OK, I get what you're doing. You choose your custom route and once you start moving the nuvi picks up the satellite signal and you're on your way! Great to know.

That's exactly how the Nuvi will treat the route to Horseshoe Bay for any of the BC Ferries routes. I usually take one of my Nuvi's from the vehicle to the seating area on the ferry and let it continue to show my route on the screen while be travel between Vancouver Island and Mainland. Helps kill the time, if nothing else.

Pardon my ignorance, but is there a convenient AC source on the ferry into which you can plug your Nuvi, or are you running it on battery?

I run it on battery for the most part. On some of the ferries there are AC sources near enough to the windows to be used by the Nuvi. If your anywhere in the interior of the ship, getting a sat lock is hit and miss. To be honest, I don't recall what boat we were on when I last plugged it in but it was probably one of the new ones, Coastal Renaissance probably.

I do a lot of ferry crossings on my motorcycle and my nuvi once in a while would totally lose its mind if the mapped ferry route and the actual course followed by the boat varied by much. It would try a few times to recalc and then go into an infinite recalc loop that would not stop until I powered off the GPS.

But once I powered back up at the end of the boat ride, everything was fine and the route picked up where it left off. And most of the time it worked properly with no recalc issues on my nuvi and my zumo.

I've had that happen a couple of times also. Very random and as you say, not fatal at all.
