I subscribed to the lifetime map update late last summer and have only used it one. The main reason being it does seem there are lots of folks who encounter problems using the lifetime updater.

I have read where the safest method is to download the file to the PC. Would someone point me to the thread that describes the procedure for updating my Garmin using this method.

Thanks!

What model of Nuvi are you going to be updating the maps on? That may make a difference in how you should update the maps.

The problems are with the software known as Lifetime Updater. The update can be done without it by going to myGarmin.com and clicking on Manage Maps.

All true but unless there is room on the Nuvi for the map update lots of other issues can arise. That's the reason I asked for what model the OP is updating.

AS PER THE FAQ, NO NEED TO QUOTE A MESSAGE DIRECTLY ABOVE YOURS, MAKES THE FORUMS EASIER TO READ, THANKS ;-) GPSPASSION TEAM
When the mapupdater sees what unit is connected to it and you click on continue the updater will show you what is available to download to your unit if do not have room for the full update. If you don't have room you can load what is reccommended or some lower option on dropdown list or remove voices and other items in your unit that aren't related to your own language including help files, etc. I have only english files left in my units.

Sorry it took so long to get back with a reply:

I am using a Garmin 750. I have purged most all foreign language files and some other unwanted clutter.

My Garnin shows a capacity of 1.85 GB
It shows 1.55 GB used and has 301 MB remaining

I am currently using CN North America NT 2012.30

Will the new map set fit my Garmin 750? If so, please give the directions without using the updater. I want to download to my PC first and then transfer to the Garmin.

Login to your myGarmin.com account with the 750 attached to the computer. Once logged in, click on the myMaps tab. Click on "download" beside the picture of your 750 and you will be taken to the Select Download Method page. On that page select Option 2 which will download Garmin Map Update application (NOTE - don't use OPTION 1 - Garmin Lifetime Updater).

On your computer go to the Garmin Map Update application and run it. Once the program finds your attached Nuvi, click on Continue and then agree to the EULA.

Now keep an eye out for the VIEW OPTIONS icon that will appear on one of the screens, in the lower left corner, after you agree to the EULA, . When you see VIEW OPTIONS click on it. On the next screen, select the Full Coverage of North America and select "download to computer only".

Once the download is completed you will find a new program called MapInstall in the Garmin folder of your computer. Run that file with the Nuvi attached to the Computer and follow the screens presented to select what parts of North America you want to include in your update. MapInstall will compile your choices and send the competed update file to your Nuvi.

All that being said, you may want to consider using the Garmin Map Update application and letting it download the maps directly to the 750. There are far fewer problems with this updater compared to the Lifetime Update program and it will tell you if the update will fit on your Nuvi or not. I'm not sure using the method I have described above (which I think is the method you asked for) will work all that well for you. Using the Garmin Map Update application will automatically overwrite the current maps on the 750 with the new version. Doing it manually, using MapInstall, may not and if it doesn't then you need to manually remove the existing maps from your 750 BEFORE you run the MapInstall program. It may be easier and safer to let the update application handle this stuff for you.

Thanks NanaimoRick!

It seems there are lots on individuals who are having trouble with the Garmin Lifetime updater. So, I followed your suggestion and had no problems. Thanks!

Question: What seems to be the problem with the Garmin Lifetime Updater? Is someone working to remedy the issue?

Thanks again!

To be honest I really don't know and would have to read through many posts to get a handle on it. I was in the beta test group for the Lifetime Updater and really never had any major issues with it other than it never told me, in any automated way, that there was an update available. That, at least to me was one of the only advantages to the program I ever saw in the first place. Anyhow, once the product was released to the masses and all the reports of problems started coming in, I stuck with it for one more update and have abandoned it since then.
I find the Garmin Map Update application works just fine for me.

I can only assume that Garmin continues to work on the Lifetime Updater program to kill the bugs and improve it. It would seem to me that's it's to their advantage to have one automated program that works well for everyone, no matter what model GPS they are using, but on the other hand Garmin isn't always known for following what we believe is the obvious path.

I tried the lifetime updater yesterday on my 370. It left me with a unit with nothing but the base map. So I tried using the map updater and it gets all most all the way through and then gives an error message that it must close. No tech support on weekends. Going on a trip Tuesday. Bad move on my part. I tried restoring the files from my hard drive but I get a message saying they are corrupt. Both of them. (I saved it in two places). I had the same problem when I bought it and downloaded the free update. Took me and tech support about a week that time. Any suggestions?

Have you attempted to use the map updater and under Install Options select "Download to Computer Only". If that download completes that way you will have a program called map install on your computer, in the Garmin directory. With the Nuvi connected to your PC, use the Mapinstall program to select the maps areas you want to load on your 370 and then let Mapinstall do the map installation for you.

It just occurs to me I am hijacking this thread. Should I start a new one or press on? Start a new one seems right.
