Received one of these via EBay a few days ago and have been tinkering. I guess that it's a clone as the IMEI isn't recognised at XeXun's website. It seems to work well; sometimes it seems to "crash" when subject to vibration while attached to our dog .....

The main question however is; should I expect a shorter battery life when it's in GPRS mode - I've got it set up with BuddyTracker, auto-polling every minute. Seem to get about 1 day out of the battery - it came with 1000mAH batteries.

When in SMS manual polling I seem to be able to get 2 or 3 days.

Would be interested to hear other people's comments.

Thanks

Hi Rasputin

Yes GPRS requires a permanent TCP connection between the tracker and the server. Indeed this is more power consumming than sending SMS.
You can test the same with your smartphone...
With my Coban GPS-102 coming with 1000mA battery I can do around 6-7 hours of tracking with a position report every 30 sec.

When disabling GPRS and without sending SMS (only call-request), battery life extend to ~3 days as promised.

@rasputin,

I suspect that, if you are getting 2 or 3 days battery life in SMS mode, then you are not polling the tracker every minute. So the comparison with GPRS mode is not totally fair.

The tracker will consume more power transmitting data (in either mode), than it will in standby mode.

In GPRS, even if not transmitting position reports, the connection is permanently open which do use more power.
It is like a call phone in call : at least 1 TDM cell is permanently occupied.

As well as transmitting a SMS requires very little transmission time.

So GPRS mode Power > SMS mode Power

Thank you for all the useful information. I seem to get about 8 hours tracking before the battery runs out in GPRS mode - from what you tell me this is about right.

A couple of items of info that may be useful to others:-

Polling GPRS at 1 minute intervals for about 8 hours generated approx 100Kb of data. This maybe useful to those wondering about the data consumption.

When the battery runs down the firmware seems to crash. BEGIN etc is the only way to get things going again ...

This tracker is attached to my dog; it looks like the battery (or whatever) may have a poor connection as the tracker seems to crash whenever he jumps about or chases something fast ...

HOWEVER .. remember that this tracker is probably a clone !

Hope these comments are useful. I think this topic is probably now closed.

I bought my clone TK102 from Cozyswan http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/560182092/GPS_Tracker_tk_102_Mini_Global.html

Everything works fine for day ore two, then it like crashes and shows sms location
000000000000
Time 00:01:01
Date 00/00/11

It doesn’t show proper sms location and I can’t track it from the web. It happens every single day. I send reboot123456 and then it works about 1 day and crashes again.

I would like to now is this happening with xexun and coban tk102 devises or is it just Cozyswan clone problem that it stops working every day.

xexun and coban devices don’t have standby mode were they will shot down gps signal for example when device is not moving for 5 days ore so?

Anybody have same problem with clone?

I have a Xexun TK 103-2 and sometimes it locks, so i have to start the engine manually and then the GPS comes back to normal. Maybe its a battery problem, i dont know. Its a original Xexun tracker.

If they didnt developed anything new, there isnt a mode to turn off the GPS (Meitrack/Meiligao has it), but you can use the tlimit command to limit the SMS the Xexun tracker will send to you, so you can setup the tracker to only send SMS when the distance from the previous location to the current one is above X meters.

If you have any other doubt, feel free to ask.
