But you zoomed way out. If you let the unit do its thing on zooming, you'd see exactly where you were. I do prefer this unit over the 3790 LMT...

I also really like the search function enhancements, which now search a much larger radius and with way faster speeds.

ZX14NINJA you don't understand whats happening, I am not a novice with GPS having been using them since the late 80s when I had to wait for enough satellites to come into view to get a fix. it was the same in auto zoom as any other method, when I question the rep that no POI icons show up, again he said that was normal, I asked why they advertised POI icons he said he didn't know but it was normal for them not to show up at all. One rep said I had a corrupted maps, another said no everything was normal. When I told him the mountain contrasts were on opposite sides and shows lake and rivers on mountain tops and road through bodies of water, again he said that was normal for the 3490LMT. I think maybe I had a bad unit but the rep on the phone said everything was normal and he was closing the file and that was all they were going to do. The unit is now on the way back to Garmin for a full refund. I hope yours turns out. If you have a 3790 run them side by side for a short trip and see the difference.

I have - and there are obvious differences, but POI's DO show up on screen, albeit, only a very few, as I had stated in a previous post somewhere in this thread. Sad that you got CSR's who didn't handle your issue well, or apparently weren't well informed. I'd be upset as well had I been told what you were.

Not sure what Garmin's logic was with the POI displaying so few when in fact, there are so many in the areas...but I'm sure there's some reason, or some fix down the road. I don't think you had a bad unit...I do think you are seeing some software glitches though.

I just got this new BlackBerry Bold 9900...talk about software issues. Been through 5-6 OS revisions...and each has a ton of bugs. Garmin's not alone with software issues...that's one thing I know for sure!

Too bad you had such a negative experience with your 3490 LMT...

I wouldn't call it POI display, it is more like ads along the road ;)
I wonder which companies could afford to get true brand logo instead of generic sign. City Navigator include many logos of gas stations, but could we see any in nuvi 34xx?

No comments about missing VIA functionality? For me this would be deal break.

Steve, I agree that my unit obviously had software issues, I had reinstalled 2.60 software and 2012-20 maps with no help. The last rep at first said the 3490LMT had a completely different operating system than the 3790T and then changed his mind and said they both had the android system. My unit never showed a single POI icon in the city of Atlanta at a street level scale or any other scale. I'm not familiar with the Blackberry but it seems like I have heard it also has a android operating system. For the few days prior to the last guy Garmin support was great and really worked hard and agreed I had a problem. but the last guy blew it.

I see POI's all the time while travelling through the cities around here in Montreal. Some of them have the brand logo and most others not, but still show some category of POI...ie; food, gas, hotel etc...

I don't know about Atlanta as I haven't tried to zoom in on it - but I'm guessing you should see POI's on screen there as well.

I am not sure that these units have the Android OS; 1st I've heard of that. I know Garmin had Linux installed on one previous device, the Nuvi 8xx series, but was unaware of the 37xx using Android. Frankly speaking - I doubt it.

BTW, totally off subject...BlackBerry's use their own proprietary OS. They are purported to have Android app support coming in a future handheld OS (QNX)- but they don't use the Android OS.

@ popej - so far, I have seen the following brand logo's on the device map screen -

Esso
Royal Bank of Canada

No doubt, they pay someone to have those logo's show up on a GPS.

See copyright notes in System about. In 37xx there is info about audio re-sampler coming form Android, not the whole OS, which is pure imagination by support.

Edit:
@bobaber: You can check in BaseCamp if your map is correct.
@ZX14NINJA: Thanks for info, I was afraid that 34xx ignore TYP file.

The rep that told me both the 3490LMT and3790T used the android system did not seem to be that well informed since all the other things he said did not add up.
popej, most of the problems were in the 3d form which base camp doen't show. My problem could have well been a single hardware componet that had lost value and even if the maps and operating system were right it would be unable to properly present the maps. I guess all we can do is wonder what happened because I'm sure Garmin will not let me know. Anyway the 3490LMT is on the way to Kansas so I can not compare it with anything else now.

I did not notice any difference but I was not looking for any. They both received good signals inside my home. I did not notice any difference in time to aquire the signals.

Having previously used TomTom and 2 Magellans, I switched to the Garmin Nuvi line years ago and don’t see a reason to change.

I picked up a Nuvi 3790LMT for a great price a month or so ago, and thanks to a great return policy, I could return it for a full refund and get a 3490.

I’d be paying about $120 more for it, so I’d probably just wait a bit for it to go on sale, but would be satisfied with my Nuvi 765 in the interim.

The 3790 has a few issues that I’m trying to resolve through Tech Support, so though I like the unit as a whole, I’m prepared to give it up if the 3490 is significantly better. My unit seems to be ‘flakey’ with myTrends and irritatingly tries to re-route me or remembers a route that I never take!

For those of you that have played with both, my question is, is it worth $120 more? I’ve read all the posts here, but I’m still undecided as to whther to just keep the 3790 or wait to get the 3490.

Thanks in advance.

Can't you just turn my trends off?

Actually, myTrends is one of the features that I wanted on the 3790! I just want it to work as designed so that it learns my preferences so it doesn't keep nagging me to route back to what it thinks should be the route. The other issue it has is that it sometimes tries to route me through a road (shows Red in Traffic) that is closed. Even my 765 knows better.

I borrowed another 3790 and updated software and maps to the same and the other one seems to work better in these respects. Odd, but the other seems to refresh and re-calculate noticeably slower than mine, so I'm not sure if I got a new unit, if some other issue would be noticed.

Anyway, I just wanted a clearer idea of whether the new 3490 is worth the extra money (also not yet available in my area) and whether it really is an improvement over the 3790 or as some have said because of less detailed maps, it would be better to keep with a 3790.

gordog,
I'm afraid that every review or advice you'll receive will reflect a little its author's preferences. In MY own personal opinion it's not worth getting the 3490, and I would be waiting to see how the 3490 development will work out. This is MY PERSONAL opinion NOW. However, as owner of 3790, I jumped to buy the new model when no reviews were available yet. - So you pay, you have the fun... If there is no rush, try to wait and see...

Larry, there is something called "traffic Trends" that can be turned on/off. The GPS records data which is sent to Garmin when connected to a PC in order 'to calculate more efficient routes...' This answers your question?

@robyt, The OP said "my trends" which is different from "traffic trends". And yes, both can be turned on and off. My pointed question was that if "my trends" was a problem, just turn it off.
