Traffic's important to me too...in DC. Very interesting to hear about your unit's inability to get the data...I wonder if it's like cell providers - some cities are killer AT&T markets, while in others you're lucky to get one bar.
On my 3490, here in DC, I usually get full bars on traffic. In fact, today I did a road test, with the Garmin 3490 vs. the TomTom 2535. Both had traffic up and running.
Starting in the city, I programmed in a destination in suburban Maryland. Both told me to go to I-495. But as I approached, the Garmin automatically re-routed me, to surface roads. The TomTom didn't. Knowing DC, I decided to drive over 495 to see the scoop - and 495 was a parking lot. Bumper to bumper for miles.
The Garmin knew it - and re-directed me. The TomTom didn't. If I had followed the TomTom, I would still be in traffic.
I'm actually a big TomTom fan, and a big Garmin fan also. Love 'em. Used them both for years. But this incident made a big impression on me.
But as I said, I have a feeling some cities are TomTom cities - others are served better by Garmin.
Thoughts?

Would it be safe to say free traffic is worth every penny? I'll stick to my cell connection until the Obsolescence Witch at Garmin strikes it dead. |

| Comparing the 3490LMT to my Nuvi 880 which used MSN Direct, the 3490 is far better. I get traffic on smaller roads that the 880 would never provide, and the updates are very fast, getting the data quickly after turning the unit on. |

I added my POIs from my 3970 to my new 3490. The POIs show up but are very small. The size of the bmp are 24x24. Has anyone created POIs with larger icons?
Thanks,
David |

No. On the 37xx, 24x24 was the biggest size you could use. Someone else tested on the 34xx and reported that 24x24 was also the max size.
The predefined POI map symbols are 32x32 on the 34xx. With a few tweaks in the resources.bin file, it is possible to make them bigger. I have found no workaround for the Custom POIs. |

Don't they show up exactly the same on the 3490 as they did on the 3970? Both models have the same screen size and resolution.
As far as I know the correct size is 24 x 24 256 color. Although it appears that Garmin is using some other size and resolution for the built in POIs that appear on the new 2012 models, those setting don't seem to apply to the custom POIs. |

Hello,
Please I need desperately HELP:
Could anyone suggest how I can make the custom POI (such as Red Light Cameras) and my own saved places to show on the map, without enabling the 'Map Layers' ? I do not want to see Dunkin Donuts, Burger Kings, etc., on the map when I'm driving.
I remember that when I switched from 880 to 3790 I had to 'tweak' the symbols, to make some of them show up, but now I am in a total darkness...
It seems that Garmin products are very 'dynamic'. And all are using different 'languages', from one model to the next, which their users/owners have to master. I purchased a Nuvi 3490 with a serial number ending in 6000s. After 2 weeks, when it broke down, I exchanged it with another unit, SN# ending in 12000s. The first unit allowed to import all saved places together with the categories they were organized under. On the new Nuvi there is no custom category, and all saved places show in one Saved location under "All Saved Places".' '
Thank you in advance for the help. |

Hello,
Nobody could master this topic of making the custom POI (such as Red Light Cameras) and saved places to show on the map, without enabling all the 'Map Layers'?
Also I discovered that a new map update North America 2012.30 is available.
Cheers. |

I just got a replacement 3490 as I was having some freezing issues. All is well.
However, I keep getting the Accept All/Reject All screen at power on for the agreements. How can I stop that message since I keep accepting them all each time?
Thanks. Still love the unit and the new map update went smoothly. |

| Once you get a good satellite lock and take the Nuvi for a spin around the block the agreements screen should no longer appear. |

Thanks Rick. I have that lock but haven't gone for that spin just yet.
Had a problem with my power gauge never showing full and trouble shutting down so I exchanged it with the retailer for a new one. Garmin was, ah, less than helpful and I would have gotten a refurbished one if I sent it to them. The last time I did that the unit I got was worse off than the one that I sent them.
Anyway, I really am enjoying this unit (went from the 3790) ... the one I originally had.
Thanks again. These forums are great. |

I just noticed something today driving home about the traffic on my 3490. I reset the FM table to get a signal like before and got a signal after a few minutes. I kept it on the traffic info screen and happened to be looking at the screen at the right time and saw the message on the top switch from "Traffic up to date" to "receiver disconnected" to "searching for signal", receiver disconnected message only popped up for a split second. The traffic signal went away and didn't come back. I checked the connections and everything was plugged in fine so not sure why it said the receiver was disconnected. It seems there is a problem when the receiver is disconnected or thinks it is and then reconnected and not getting a signal unless to reset the FM table.
Is there a lot of people who's traffic works fine on the 3490? |

| The receiver doesn't disconnect unless you physically pull the plug. This issue you'e describing was something we saw on the 3790, but to date, I have not on the 3490. You either have a bad plug or GPS. |

I've had the same issue (different city and route). I spent an hour running thr troubleshooting with a very friendly and knowledgeable Garmin rep. Garmin eventually replaced my unit with a new one -- same problem with the new. So, I shipped that one back for testing and the Garmin tech department was able to duplicate my error but not fix it. There is some sort of software/firmware problem with the 3490. Hopefully Garmin engineering will resolve it soon.

Thanks Rick. No, it's not the combination of avoidances. Other models can still do it and it's apparently a bug. What I am trying to figure out is if it's consistent accross all untis and is likely to be a mapping bug to which this new model is particularly sensitive or some strange hardware bug specific to my unit. My 255W uses the same version of CNNA maps and has no problems calculating a route. Could anyone try to route between the two destination I mentioned on the previous page please?

Would you confirm so voice message: "recalculating" is removed from 34xx series ? In my opinion it is very important to know about recalculation during trip without checking display from time to time. Bad news if it is true |
