3790T and 3490T side by side

Original post: My 3490LMT arrived on 10/3 from Garmin. I am using it side by side with my 3790T to compare the two. First observation is the 3490LMT does not have the clarity in the map page that the 3790T has. The 3490LMT does not show the detail (street names and small towns long the route) the 3790T shows. Both are set to "more" detail. So far I have only seen one icon ( a "Hardees" icon) and it went away and has not shown up again. In the 3D mode the shadows of the mountains are on the oposite side of the mountain on the 3490LMT. The best I remember my 3790T had similar problems when I first got it and it was corrected in the first map update. I am trying to reinstall 2012-20 maps in the 3490LMT but the lifetime map update is not working to to server problems. I will post details when I am able to update the maps. |

I have taken a picture of the 3790T and 3490LMT side by side with both at the same scale but try as I did I can not figure out how to send them. I followed the upload link but can not find the picture using the instructions. The difference in detail between the two is great.

Thanks for the screenshots SiamMarine but make sure they don't exceed 640 in width, if you don't have software to resize them quickly this website will do it automatically : http://www.imagilive.com/en/index.xml - I did it for your first pics above and linked to the full size version.
@bobaber - Thanks for the upload, the instructions need to be fixed then, can you post over there what part threw you off so we can fix it? Please put your UserID in front of the file name too so it won't be "crushed" by another upload.

Do you enable DEM map for 3490LMT ? It seem 3490 display Basemap DEM instead DEM map.

| There should be an entry under Tools - MyMaps for CNNA-Upper Can - Dem North America DEM. That entry should be checked by default, just make sure that it is. Also the CN North America NT 2012.20 3D entry should be checked on both devices. |

I finally found my maps in the 3490LMT. It a little different route to get there. Both are checked.

My gut feeling is that Garmin has reduced street name detail (again) in order to compensate for displaying such things as POIs which were not shown on a stock 37xx. Unless of course there is a setting somewhere that needs to be enabled/disabled.
EDIT: There were also reports that the 37xx series DEM map showed the DEM detail as being inversed or upside-down. Maybe the 34xx corrects that but at the same time, shows a lot less of the DEM detail as evidenced in the first comparison shot. |
