The small, ruggedised, portable, lightweight Magellan NAV 1000 M5 GPS receiver was widely used in the 1990-91 Gulf War by a number of coalition force members for applications such as vehicle and troop positioning and so on. Typically it would be mounted at the driver or commander station. The Magellan NAV 1000 M5 makes use of the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite network and since the 21-satellite constellation (plus three in-orbit spares) was completed in 1994, it has allowed highly accurate positional calculations to be performed at any point on the earth.
