As the title says.

Does anyone have any experience with active, high - gain GPS antennas from other companies? I'm planning of replacing my Toyota OEM in - dash navigation unit's antenna with something having higher sensitivity. It uses a proprietary plug which can be scavenged off eBay, and is interchangeable with non - JBL - equipped audio systems.

Typical Toyota specs are as follows (a quick cut - and - paste):

Antenna, Navigation
08663-00820
04D0
Aisin AW Co., Ltd.
86860-60V160
Made in China

Dimensions: 26 x 26 x 12.9mm
Weight: 14g
Power Supply Voltage: 4.0 – 5.0V (typically active, 20 - 30db gain?)
Power Consumption: 10 to 30mA
Usage Temperature: -30 to +90C
Storage Temperature: -40 to +110C

Unfortunately, I have no info on the chipset used on this system.

Could I jury - rig this antenna for better gain in areas such as Manhattan?

Looks like a long term project ;-) Are you really experiencing reception problems with your current setup? It should have a gyro so getting started in a dense urban area shouldn't be a problem.
