NEWS - GARMIN ETREX 10/20/30
Maps - Waterproof - High Sensitivity GPS - Color (20/30) - Sensors (30)

eTrex 10/20/30 Minisite : >> LINK <<

Garmin have just announced a new generation of eTrex handheld GPS systems, the eTrex 10/20/30 that takes over from the eTrex H series launched in 2007 with the original models dating back to 1998.

Unlike the Oregon and Dakota , the eTrex doesn't have a touchscreen, which can be inconvenient, but makes for better outdoor legibility, better battery life...and lower prices. This seems to be the main selling point here with prices being respectively $120 (10/basic), $200 (20/color) and $300 (30/sensors), when the basic Dakota starts at $300. The new form factor is pleasing to the eye but we'll have to wait to see whether the interface has been streamlined.

Questions, comments?

Still no product specs on Garmin's site, but it appears these do not support raster imagery (either BirdsEye or Custom Maps). If true, I think it's a big mistake to make these units so limited. Wouldn't that have more to do with marketing than technical issues? I can't see any reason to choose the eTrex 30 over the Dakota 20, which is going for ~$250 these days I believe. Maybe the screen will be a bit more readable in certain conditions?

I agree, it might be a tough sell. I guess some people will take the eTrex 30 over the Dakota 20 to get the sensors. I'm really curious what kind of interface they'll be using and whether their power has been ramped up a bit. Probably not a lot given the long battery life. My eTrex HCx Vista struggles with map display.

The Dakota 10 doesn't have sensors or a card slot, but the Dakota 20 has the triaxial compass, altimeter and slot. Does the eTrex have something more than that?

Sorry I meant the Dakota 10, the entry level, model, with the same MSRP of $300 as the eTrex 30.

does anyone know if the 10 will have maps that can be viewed like the 20 and 30? I know they will be in B&W but I have not been able to see picures of what a map would look like.. any ideas anyone?

Welcome to the forums.

At this point it doesn't look like it since the blog entry specifies that the eTrex 10 can use a "worldwide basemap" while the 20/30 can "View a wide array of detailed topographic, marine, and road maps".

The biggest news about these everyone is missing is the addition of GLONASS capability in a consumer handheld.

From the Garmin spec page: "The new eTrex series is the first-ever consumer-grade receivers that can track both GPS and GLONASS satellites simultaneously. GLONASS is a system developed by the Russian Federation that will be fully operational in 2012. When using GLONASS satellites, the time it takes for the receiver to “lock on” to a position is (on average) approximately 20 percent faster than using GPS. And when using both GPS and GLONASS, the receiver has the ability to lock on to 24 more satellites than using GPS alone."

I'd love to see a review that compares the old eTrex GPS units to the news eTrex GPS/GLONASS in terms of positional accuracy and cold start times.

What about the 62s vs the eTrex 30? I seem to have narrowed down the 2 as possible hunting/treking companions...

I don't think you can go wrong with either, the dual gps/glonass mode is certainly intriguing, whether it makes a difference under thick cover remains to be seen.

By the way, some resellers are advertising the new eTrex series as using the SirfStar3 chipset which seems a bit strange since they moved to MTK and STM Cartesio years ago. Besides if they were going to go back to SiRF why not go with the latest SiRF4 chipset ?
