Some people are wondering what TomTom are up to:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/29/tomtom-working-on-its-own-street-view-like-service/
Here's an excerpt: quote: If camera-toting vans like the one above are any indication, it would appear that the company is currently working to bolster its navigation options with its own Street View-like service. So far, all of the van sightings seem to be confined to Europe (France and Belgium, specifically), and they of course don't necessarily confirm that TomTom is indeed working on a Street View competitor -- although we have to wonder what the vans are for if it's not.
Maybe this might allow them to offer real views of turns in the future, as part of advanced lane guidance. Or maybe it will allow them to review corrections better, with historical data of an area where an error is reported. I hardly think TomTom would want to go to all this trouble, and expense, just to make the Route Planner a competing service to Google Maps, with street views included.
EDIT: TomTom released an official statement, apparently, that they shared in their own users' forum: quote: Mobile mapping as we have it today was already launched in the second half of 2004 and the images are used for internal purpose only; this imagery is not available for commercial purpose.
TomTom uses mobile mapping systems to increase data gathering efficiency. We collect images via the mobile mapping vans to check, maintain and update our digital map databases.
If that's the case, then maybe it's time they got a few of those "gizmos" driving around over here as well! |
