I once owned a Garmin Street Pilot 2610 together with Mapsource software which enabled me to manage favourites, routes, maps etc and download them to the Sat-Nav. I no longer own the sat-nav or the Mapsource software.
I am thinking of re-joining the Garmin fold and am attracted by the new Nuvi 2460 provided that I can use it with Mapsource.
However - will it work with the 2460 as it did with my Street Pilot 2610?
I looked on the Garmin website which states that it is bundled with DVD maps - the 2460 will be pre-loaded with maps so how can mapsource be obtained separately in the UK? |

Have a look in our FAQ for lots of iinfo on this. Customers in the UK have not been as successful getting MapSource from Garmin as those in the US, but that is mostly a moot point now that BaseCamp is available for free via download.

Are you sure that the 2460 is "bundled with DVD maps"? That would be very unusual. Nuvi's have not ever included DVD's here in the US.
Mapsource is free but you just need to know how to get it, which is very simple. As Dan says, Basecamp is also free so download and install it first (this is very important): http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435
After you have installed Basecamp, you may now download and install Mapsource: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209
Now you're all set with both programs, but you will only have a crude basemap and not detailed city maps. Your new Nuvi will be eligible for a free map update is one becomes available within 60 days. When you download this update, there will be an "advanced" button that lets you install the full maps on your computer.
In the absence of that, just connect your Nuvi to your computer and run Basecamp. It can access the map directly on the Nuvi. Mapsource can't do that. |

I didn't word it very well - I meant that Mapsource is said to be bundled with the DVD maps - My understanding is that the NUVI comes pre-loaded with NT Maps with no DVD or means of getting the maps onto the computer.
Thanks for providing the route to getting Mapsource. I have just installed and taken a quick look at base camp and it seems to be less versatile than Mapsource - for example - it seems to lack an address search by UK Post Code |

If I buy the Nuvi - I will also buy the lifetime map updates (I cannot see the 2460 for sale in the UK bundled with the Lifetime map option)
I assume that the map updates are downloaded from the Garmin site and can then be installed on the computer for use by mapsource. Hopefully there is a way of either downloading the update twice - or copying the maps onto both my Desktop and Laptop computers for use at home and away. |

Yes, you can install the lifetime updates on your computer using the advanced install option. Since I don't have them, I'm not sure if you would have to download twice to install on the second machine.
One of Garmin's developers has also posted the procedure for copying maps between machines in their forum here: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?t=17099 |

2460 can't import any Mapsource/Basecamp routes for now. I am waithing for the software update, because Garmin promised it (firstly, for 37xx).
Since nuvi series came to market, garmin always did the products, that can't do something from the list. For example, streetpilot had tracks, customization for map screen, road avoidances, routes management. Look at this history: nuvi 3x0 - no anything, 5 via points nuvi 2x0 - hidden raw tracks (needs firmware modification), 5 via points 2x5, 7x5, 1xxx - user tracks, simplified and adjusted to road (useless), hidden tracks more accesible, even gpx format introduced, 1sec logging interval 12xx, 13xx - one via point! 14xx - returned customization on map screen, routes activated
1xxx have smaller info on the screen, few road names on display, no poi while driving, several poi while browsing map in 2d.
2xxx and 37xx have no poi at all displayed. Since 1xxx serie there is a major problem with buildings contours. If the building has height, it is not shown on the screen, while all the previous models(!!!) display it correctly. For now it is solved in 37xx with the latest firmware 3.90 (that is buggy still with the long routes).
2460. Yeea! It has road avoidances and customization for map screen! Tracks? Generalized and snapped to the road. Routes management? Oh, nice inside the device. Routes from Mapsource can not be imported!

I have found a fairly comprehensive review of the 2460 which states "Can import multi-destination routes from Mapsource".
Is this an error?
See here.. http://tinyurl.com/63o2vy9
Scroll to top of the page when it opens and then read down through the review.

| Rich has confirmed that the 2400 series CAN import mapsource routes in another forum. So evidently it is being shipped with the firmware update that has been promised for the 2700 and 2300 series. |

I took delivery of a new Nuvi 2460LT this morning and can confirm that you can download routes from Mapsource to the sat-nav.
I have only spent an hour playing with the new unit including taking it for a short test drive - and am mightily impressed with it so far. |

| Thanks for clarifying. I will remove this from my black list. So now 3790 has poor functionality and slow route calculation speed and hangs, until the next SW update. |

| I downgraded my 3790 to version 2.5. Maybe I will try again when they add custom routes... |

| I'll second the fact that the 2460 will receive routes from MapSource. Once uploaded the route is immediately available (no need to import from My Data like on the Nuvi 755). The route is imported into the new Trip Planner, where the route can be optimized and edited. Via points can be rearranged by dragging with your finger. This looks good but I haven't had a chance to test it on a trip yet. |
