I'm a newly registered user; however, I have been reading this forums for a couple of months. I thought I would give back to the community and help with the Garmin Nuvi 205W "System Software Missing" after webupdater crash/failure.

I called Garmin last night (waiting on hold for 1 hour 22 mins exactly) and requested that the firmware/restoration service file be sent to me. After installing it as per the direction, I had my working (and updated) Nav.

1x Garmin Nuvi 205W
1x USB A to Mini USB Cable
1x Current Updated Service Firmware
Download Them Here:

1x PC (No Mac as this is a EXE file)

Directions (As per the e-mail from tech support)

We do apologize that you are encountering this issue with your Garmin device. Below I have attached some step by step instructions that will help guide you through the process of getting the system software restored back on to your Garmin device. If you have any further questions or concerns, always feel free to contact us here at Garmin, we'll be happy to help you. Thanks and have a great day.

The system software missing error message is normally an error message that displays when an update does not load properly to the unit, or the unit lost power during the update procedure.

****Connect Device to PC****

1. Download and install the latest USB drivers from our website which can be found here <>
2. Download the attached file to your desktop
3. Extract the contents of the file
4. Make sure your GPS is turned off and disconnected from the computer
5. Drag the.rgn file and drop it on top of the Updater.exe (or Updater) file
6. With your GPS turned off, plug it into the computer
7. Click the "USB Device" button
8. When your GPS shows up in the USB Device field, click OK
9. Click "Yes" if prompted
10. Once this process is complete, disconnect your unit from the computer and allow it to restart

After following this procedure your unit should now be functioning properly, I recommend running the webupdater program to make sure there are no additional updates available for your device, such as GPS software, or Bluetooth/MSN/Traffic software if your unit is compatible with those particular features. You can download the webupdater program here <>

Please contact Garmin Product Support at 1-800-800-1020 anytime from 8:00 to 6:00 Central, M-F, or by e-mail at should you have any additional comments or questions.

Let the best of your todays, be the worst of your tomorrows.
