Danham, I see in your sig that you have the 2010 jetta tdi.

Tell me about the car. Likes, dislikes, handling, etc.

I've been tossing the idea of getting something like that for some time now. Does the cost of diesel outweigh the additional cost of the car? How long you figure before you break even and start savings $$?

Thanks!

I love it. But I wouldn't buy it just to save money on fuel - Diesel fuel prices are no bargain, so even at 47 mpg on the highway it would take a lot of driving to "make up" the difference.

Instead, buy one to have a good handling, peppy clean (no smoke or smell, very efficient emission controls) car that is "better" than a hybrid in many ways, especially if you do more highway than city driving (where a hybrid has the advantage).

Check out http://www.tdiclub.com/ for lots more info.

Thanks for the feedback. Will have to test drive one soon. Although if it takes me 30K miles to break even, that's questionable savings.

I've driven many many many (yes, I travel that much) rental cars in various parts of the US. Other than a handful of few, most handle like crap. Too soft, poor tires, etc. Several cars stand out - 09 Nissan maxima 3.5L with 19" wheels, and a mercedes e350 or 360. The latter obviously out of my price range, but the nissan was very nice in nearly all aspects (too bad it wasn't rwd).

A test drive will amaze you. It is hard to detect that you are driving a Diesel, except for the awesome low-end torque. People "buy horsepower but drive torque," as the saying goes, and these cars have lots of pulling power. Mine climbs any hill the Interstates can throw at it at 2000 rpm in 6th gear on cruise control at about 70 mph.

Before rejecting the TDI due to long payoff horizons, be sure to check out the same numbers for hybrids. Some have a faster payoff, but not much. All I'm saying is it shouldn't be the primary reason for buying a TDI (or a hybrid, for that matter).

As for handling, I traded an Audi A3 for my TDI and no, the Jetta is not a sports car. But it is incredibly nimble for a station wagon, and "fun to drive" is a comment I hear over and over applied to the TDIs and not to the Prius. Back to back test drives will tell that story quite effectively.

I have to add my praise of this vehicle to Dan's as my wife and I just took delivery of ours this afternoon. We had a list of 6 vehicles on our list of possible purchased and after test driving the VW first, everything else just didn't make the grade. Although we haven't driven ours on any of our famous "road trips" yet we were really bowled over by how much fun this wagon is to drive.

We just got back from New Orleans and arrived to unseasonably warm temps, which the Diesel loves. Driving from the airport to our home (~90 miles) we had the AC on, cruised at 70 and experienced moderate to heavy traffic, including some stall-n-crawl in construction. The net result was still 45.0 mpg for the trip. Amazing.

I know this is an older post. There's an incredible user community at www.tdiclub.com
We had a 2001 and we chipped it. The difference in perfomance was incredible. Reportedly it had 1/3 more torque. We saw no change in fuel economy.
If you do buy a diesel, be careful fueling up. Carry (disposable) gloves. The fuel nozzles are often incredibly dirty, and covered with diesel fuel. It's amazing how long that smell can linger.
Saddest diesel sight I've seen was an early Smart Car (diesel) waiting behind a gravel truck and school bus for its turn to get a few thimble fulls of diesel.
It might have been a long wait.
Fuel economy is incredible. Torque is amazing. Mass Airflow Sensors (failed on mine) were incredibly expensive compared to gasoline fueled car.
That site is incredible for tdi owners. The people posting there are generous with information, well informed, and very helpful.

I have a couple of questions about diesel use in Canada.
* is low sulphur fuel hard to find?
* do you have to use low sulphur fuel?

I used to run Sunoco Gold Diesel and it made a noticable difference for me. Sunoco seems to have been replaced by Husky, with some stations going to Petro Canada. I have no idea whether this fuel is still available.
