BAVC10. I would love to know how the new routing algorithm works with the 3790 as compared to the old system without traffic trends? For me this is the most important developement in the 37 series. Thank you.

Always know where you are.

Well unless there are specific examples with before/after that's not going to be very meaningful I'm afraid. About Traffic Trends I did get confirmation the other day that they are using their own collected data (only the 1690 does that AFAIK so they can't have that much data handy), not Navteq's traffic patterns, which strikes me as odd.

On the routing though, are you offered several alternative routes before you head out or is that still a Zumo 660 (and Navigon in Europe) exclusive ?

I'd like to see some comments on the external sound using the new mount/speaker, especially the volume level and how it compares to past nuvis.

They are collecting data when you plug into MyGarmin, I'm not sure whether all devices are now doing this, but certainly my 1310 does, so I would say all 12, 13 and 14xx devices are feeding back data from track logs as far back as these devices will hold.

I would like to know if you can select departure time, this would show the range of journey times. If you do this on TomTom devices or the route planner you can see the standard deviation can be pretty wide across high traffic areas.

I'll do a post later this evening.

Haven't seen much evidence of different routing due to nutrends as yet but unit seems really good so far.

Ok - got a few hundred miles on the 3790T so here goes.

Very impressed with the unit - you do have to be firmer with the key presses than on the 1690 / 765 type of screen and the gloss finish is prone to fingermarks. There is a new display timeout function.

The zooming in / out is better - seems to zoom out more when you have no upcoming turns and gradually zoom in as you get closer. I had my 1690 running side by side with the 3790 and the zooming was definitely different yet much smoother.

Display is the best thing about the unit. You can customise the map dispay to your country, ie in the UK Motorways now show up as Blue, A roads as green or red and B roads as yellow as you would see on a map. You can choose between UK, French, German, Dutch, Danish, Polish, Italian etc........ You can't change the colours individually, just by Country but it is a nice touch. The topographical display also gives a "warmer" feel to the unit. In town there are many more road names displayed - almost back to the 360 Nuvis. It was more like using a proper digitised map with background colours rather than a stark white. You can also have the more detailed map data layout like the newer Nuvis.

Most of the Nuroutes / Nutrends data is accessed via the Navigation screen and is either enabled or disabled.

The Photoreal junctions are fantastic, much better than on the 1690 or 765 as they are photos of the junction not a "drawn graphic" of the junctions and there are more on the 2011,10 map on the 3790 than my 1690 - go figure???

The World basemap is version 5 and there is a European DEM map as well as the 2011.10 map, 3dmap and nutrends data.

When you enter a tunnel the screen automatically switches into night mode.

Browse map function os like that of the 765 with a 360degree reotation

I haven't seen much evidence of Nutrends working but the 3790 routes differently to my 1690 so something has changed.

There only seems to be a Car and Pedestrian mode now from the main screen, bicycle is there but takes a few screens to get to it.

When you encounter traffic there is a new screen that calculates two routes for you to choose - no option to detour a specific road as per all other Nuvi's.

The speaker is plenty lound enough in the unit itself so I am surprised that there was a need for one in the mount but this works fine and I have the volume turned down to 40%.

The vertical / horizontal change of screen works fine, only a slight tilt and it changes orientation - split junction view and road view is nice.

I think there are one or two minor bugs - key presses are firm which may be ok in Pedestrian mode but not for Driving mode. If you go off route the 3790 takes longer to recalculate the route than the 1690 by some margin - this may be due to looking at the nutrends data.

I haven't tried the voice control but I was surprised that you can set commands for routes and basic instructions - not the "wake up" phrase that Garmin have been promoting.

Speed Camera alerts are now displayed more prominently than the 1690 with a red box if overspeed and grey for warning but the box size is around twice the size of that in the 1690.

If you click the "off" button the unit goes into sleep mode so that a quick tap brings you straight back to Where to screen whereas holding the "off" button for a few seconds gives you the shutdown option.

All in all very impressed and I am sure this will be a winner for Garmin.

I've taken some side by side shots so if I can find out how to upload I will.

Thanks BAVC10. Great update. Would you be able to share a couple of routing scenarios; maybe city to city to keep the origin/destination easy ... and comment on the routing decision differences between 3790 vs. 1690? Thx!

I want one. I want one now.

I wonder if you could try a route calculation for me, it might give an idea of traffic trends data.

Could you try a route between these two postcodes, LN22AQ and CV227jj.

This is a route I regularly run and gives me an eta of 1h 21 mins after a hard reset. After some driving it usually gives me around 1h 39 ish. The actual journey time is nearer to 1h 55m. Could be interesting to see what the 3790t does.

Thanks Danham - happy to share these with you.

First screenshot shows new detail with "map like" background

New Traffic incident screen

All Roads labelled

New Alternate route in traffic

Uk "A" Roads show in Green with UK Map theme

Map Overview screen with new DEM file

UK Motorways now show in Blue with UK Map theme

Traffic congestion screen updated

The next two are from the Navigation screen - Note Map Theme and NuRoute
21035
NuRoute detail screen

Finally tried the Voice Command - this ROCKS. Allows you to do the following (Stop, Detour and Go Home greyed out as no active route and no home set up yet.

Nice, what color scheme is that ? Had forgotten about the new 800x480 resolution, makes things sharper especially with the "iPhone type" screen. A bit large for the forums where 600x480 works best but we'll live with it ;-)

Someone in the FRA forums mentioned that the "screen beep" was a tad annoying, he couldn't find a way to deactivate it.

Thanks BAVC.

Those screen shots look pretty cool. Does the alternate traffic route give you several alternatives with different eta's and distances?

The extra detail along with the map themes mean you really can use it as an atlas to browse, very good indeed.

That screen shot with A1M Huntingdon looks like you were driving on the A1139 in Peterborough, that's my neck of the woods, am I right?

Happy to see they are putting all those pixels to good use; I really like the names in small text right on top of the roads themselves in the 2d screenshot. This is something we haven't seen before on Garmin. Do those names show in 2d driving mode as well as browse mode?
