I have a Pharos GPS Phone 600 and I am wondering if I can configure it as a GPS receiver to feed GPS data to a Dell Mini 10 netbook? I do have a Garmin City Navigator North America NT 2009 DVD, can I simply download that onto the Dell Mini 10, use the Pharos as the GPS receiver and the CN 2009 for mapping? Or would I be better off just getting Garmin Mobile PC? I guess since I have never used Garmin Mobile PC, I am just assuming that it is more customized to use mobile than CN 2009. In either case, since the netbook has limited memory, can either Garmin Mobile PC or CN 2009 simply be loaded onto a USB flash drive and work that way or does it have to be on the hard drive? Also, is there still a fee 15 day trial available for Garmin Mobile PC?

You can't connect to a live GPS feed with Mapsource anymore, so yes, you'd be better off getting Garmin Mobile PC.

Thank you for the reply.

When was the last MapSource that this could be connected to a GPS?

Also, if I focus on Garmon Mobile PC, could it be installed on a USB drive or does it have to be installed on the hard drive?

I think you have to go WAY back to find Mapsource that works with a GPS. However Garmin used to have a free program called nRoute which looks a lot like Mapsource and works with GPS'es. It is no longer available from Garmin but can be downloaded here:

http://www.gawisp.com/perry/nroute/

I am running version 276 on an Asus netbook and it's actually very nice. Unfortunately, Mobile PC doesn't work properly with some custom topo maps that I've created but nRoute does (I broke a lot of Garmin's rules with my map :) ).

Don't know anything about your phone, but for using other kinds of GPS receivers, have a look at GPSGate, it's very cool:

I am using it with a Microsoft USB GPS along with nRoute, Streets and Trips and OziExplorer. It even allows me to run all of these at the same time.

The free trial of Mobile PC doesn't seem to work anymore - I got an error when trying to activate it the other day. However, you can still run the software without a GPS. Download the latest update:

Do NOT run the installer. Instead, use WinRAR or WinZIP to extract all the files to a folder. Now run the Main.msi program and it will install. Start the program and when it asks which version you have, tell it you've got the version that includes the GPS. The program will run then, but obviously you won't be able to use a GPS. You will have to install your own maps using Mapsource, or else just drop a gmapsupp.img file into the program's Garmin folder.

I don't know if you can choose the install location - I think so. Give it a try.
