I have a Motorola Droid and a MIO c520 and the Droid is just about to cause the MIO to be removed.
If it were not for the lack of a map browsing night mode it would have been done.
The Google maps did recently release a night mode for navigation but not for general browsing.

The Droid will plot a route and then you can hit a menu/"route info" button to toggle through other variations of the route. So far I have seen routes with 3 variations available.

I love my MIO but she is about to be replaced.

I hear you. I would be a big move to pull the c520 off the dash. The maps being older on the MIO and Google constantly updating theirs is a killer too. It's evolution that may be the near end of units that carry maps on a chip. As you point out, there are still the needs of the out of network usage though.

actually, depending on what droid you have, it may have a GPS receiver built in, I have a droid X, it has 3 ways of tracking, network (cell), wifi, and GPS receiver. I've got 3 awsome gps programs on it for on and off road use. there is no hacking required for this. but if you want free wifi hotspot via your droid, you can root it, which I also did... simply put, the X puts my nav units on the shelf!
