That's a significant enhancement. I look forward to your report.
Hopefully Garmin will do a big update on the 1690 and give us some new capabilities!
BTW, I haven't seen any updates to the ecoRoute HD in a long time. That should be due as well.

| I am thinking of buying the Ecoroute HD for my BMW. I have a Nuvi 1690 gps. Does anyone know if the device can damage anything with the computer? Can it void my warranty? Thanks. |

lumis,
I have a 1690 and the ecoRoute HD and have been running it for about 5 months now. I don't see any way that the ecoRoute HD device could harm your vehicle or affect your warranty. I'm driving a 2008 Honda Ridgeline.

| Thanks for the reply speedlever! I might give it a try. Amazon is selling it for $69.99 right now. |

$69? Wow. I thought I got a good deal when I paid $130 5 months ago.

| I am sorry Garmin did not add support for the HD to the 7x5 series (at least those with Bluetooth support). I have Ecoroute but no capability to use the HD. |

Just tested it on a short drive, works exactly like on the 1690 and 1695, the gauges do look a bit "sharper" thanks to the higher resolution and/or smaller screen size.quote: Originally posted by speedlever

And I thought I'd gotten a terrific deal when I got it for $89.99 in August!
I'm afraid this is a sign that it's not selling well and it seems it's no longer available (not sure it really made it in numbers) in Europe.
I must say that while it's a unique accessory for a GPS system and that it gives useful information, it's hardly a "killer device/app" (might change my mind if/when it detects an error code on my car).
I think would be a bit more useful if it showed the remaining gas like the Scangauge but since it needs the nüvi to be turned on I don't see how that could be achieved.

Actually, the ecoRoute HD records the data even if the Nuvi is turned off. You only need the Nuvi turned on to see the data.

Enhancements to the 1690 or the ecoRoute HD?
For the 1690, it's always fun to get new features. While I'd love to see the enhanced weather, I'm not inclined to pay for it.
For the HD, I'd like to see more data options like oil temp, pressure, tranny fluid temp, etc. But I don't know what info is in the data stream to extract, so it may be wishful thinking.

Yes it was enhancements to EcorouteHD and yes Garmin may be limited by what's available.
Interesting find on the recording done by the EcorouteHD module, nothing is preventing Garmin from showing an estimation of the remaining gas in the tank then, that would add some value I think. |

Connected EcorouteHD with my 3790T on a 2006 Jetta TDI diesel. It works fine so far. The average mileage readouts seem a little high but I will do reset for the next time I fill up to compare.
The gauges work but I have not compared how they differ from a gasoline engine. I have the coolant and outside air intake temps, the engine load, battery voltage, and mass air flow on. All work fine. I use the GPS in Portrait mode and the gauges all display fine and are easy to read.
I wish it could show oil pressure, turbo boost, and exhaust temp but I don't know if the OBD-II even provides that data. |

Thanks for the report on the TDI -- I'm now a bit more tempted. I wonder what is meant by "engine load" -- Diesels have no throttle plate, so no way to get intake manifold vacuum as a measure of "load."
Some of the items you mention are in the data stream on a VW's OBD port, but readable only by software that knows the proprietary VW codes (Google Ross Tech or VCDS for details). I don't think oil pressue is included, but VCDS devices can definitely read boost and exhaust temp (in fact several exhaust temps and pressure differentials on the newer Common Rail Diesels), among many other items.

These are the gauges that are available when connected to my Jetta TDI:
Engine Load, Coolant Temp, Intake Manifold Pressure, Intake Air Temp, Mass Air Flow, Throttle Position, Battery Voltage, Speed, RPM (you can select any five from this list)
I don't know if this list is vehicle/engine specific. While there isn't a turbo boost pressure gauge I assume that the Intake Manifold Pressure is giving an indirect reading of boost. I would appreciate any insight into the meaning and interpretation of Engine Load and Mass Air Flow.

Fascinating. I'd recommend heading over to tdiclub.com and looking for a TDI "guru" in your area. Then you could have them hook up their VCDS and correlate its readings with the gauges you describe.
Just out of curiosity, what units are shown on the Mass Air Flow gauge? It will also be fun to compare coolant temp via OBD with your dash gauge -- VW is famous for having its temp gauges "live" at straight up (190 if marked in F) beginning when the engine is really at about 120 and continuing well past 190, just to keep owners from freaking out about variations. My comment: why bother having a gauge then?
