I've made progress in that I finally have the GPS to the point where it is recognized on USB by computer...as I could not find : 275257514/Mag4250.zip.html
I tried loading the TFAT contents from a working unit...came up with "this navigator is not compatible with this unit" error.
Anyone know where 275257514/Mag4250.zip.html can be found?
Thanx

Hi all,
Since installing all the files from a good unit did not work I decided to try GPSbackup.rar. On reboot it goes to system settings, then starts the process of loading Mio Pocket...shows the progress of installing all the needed components...then does nothing. What have I done wrong?
Wow...this sure is frustrating...all because of an incomplete firmware update!!!!
Thanx

May be a dumb responce to your question, but I screwed up in middle of FW install. and it let me do it again (took 3 times til I got a "Installed" msg) have you tried to reinstall it? Or can you not connect to PC?

Also there are some certine things you have to do to install on a 4250 I believe, otherwise it installs over and over, this page is allot of help installing:
http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=125521

EDIT:
I could try and upload all my files from my 4250 minus map files and Unit_ID.dat file if that may help you? If post your email, I can help you a bit more if you need maps..

Hope that helps..

heres the rapid share file that isnt there anymore, I uploaded it to my server, heres the link:
http://www.offroadnuts.com/Mag4250.zip

butatoe: if your getting currupt files, you will need to download it again, all files are checked and working, sometimes if you get a 'hickup' in internet service this will currupt the file its currently downloading.

I also have just about any file to get the 4250 working, and all maps (iGO8 and Magellan)

STEP 1: Download http://www.offroadnuts.com/GPS/Magellan_Maestro_4250_4_86_Rel1.zip. Extract that file. You'll get an self extracting .exe file of the same name. Extract that too. Open up the new folder "Magellan_Maestro_4250_4_86_Rel1". There are two files you'll need here, COPY_GROUP_4/GS499_BL_3.bin and COPY_GROUP_5/GS499_MX_3.bin.

***WARNING*** DO NOT RUN THE "UPDATE BOOTLOADER" or the "Update Bootloader (Erase Flash)" or the "UpDate OS (Erase HDD)" this will leave you with gps that isnt good for much unless you've already gotten the "white screen", If you do have the "white screen" go ahead hit and "UpDate OS (Erase HDD)" **THE FIRST TIME ONLY** ....**THE FIRST TIME ONLY** cant stress that enough!!!!

STEP 2: Insert your SD card into your card reader and Copy those two files to your SD card. Rename GS499_BL_3.bin to GS499_BL_3.nb0
Take your SD card out of computer and Insert it into the GPS
Now get into your boot menu. You do this by holding down the power and reset buttons for several seconds, continue holding after the screen comes on until you see the boot menu.
Next select "Update OS" You select by pushing the reset button with a pin, each push move the Selection down one, Then push the power button to execute the operation selected.

STEP 3: repeat step 2 exactlly the same for ...1.bin, and 2.bin, renaming the "BL" file and all, only do 2 at a time (MX_2.bin and BL_2.nb0) then (MX_1.bin and BL_1.nb0) **make sure there are only 2 files on the SD card at a time during this step.

STEP 4: Turn your unit off, and put the SD card back into your computer and format it.
Download MioPocket 3.0 here:
http://www.offroadnuts.com/GPS/MioPocket56.zip
Extract files
From the MioPocket files:
MioPocket 3.0 Release 56\MioAutoRun\Programs\FileManCE2
copy the contents of that folder to the root of your SD card.
Rename FileManCE.exe to ToCopy.exe

STEP 5: Create a new folder on the root of the SD card and name it APP.
From the Magellan files downloaded first go to:
Magellan_Maestro_4250_4_86_Rel1\COPY_GROUP_2
Copy the following files into the folder you just made call APP

mgnShell.exe
brightness.dat
ding.wav
Factory.xml
mgnSHApp.dll
mgnShell.pgf
mgnSHLocaleEng.dll
mgnSHTzList.dat
Startup.xml (you have to edit it)
TMScreen.dll
Unit.xml (you have to edit it)

As I noted you have to modify two XML files on the SD card with Wordpad. right click on file and choose OPEN WITH: and choose Wordpad
1. insert the following into Unit.xml on line 27 (count the lines of code starting from top)

<Application ID="222">
<FileName>softbutton.exe</FileName>
<Path>\HDD\MyApplications</Path>
<Bitmap>32x32x16.bmp</Bitmap>
</Application>

2. Replace the content of Startup.xml with:

<Shell>
<Application ID="222" />
</Shell>

STEP 6: Now stick the SD card back into you Magellan and turn it on. You should get a loading screen, and after about 10 or 12 seconds the FileManCE2 program. Use it to copy the APP folder into the folder called HDD, so HDD\APP.
To do this I found it easyer to use a toothpick to press my selections on the screen.

In the FileManCE2 program touch "SDMMC" twice to open it ,(some times it takes more the 2 touches to get this open) This is your SD card.
Touch "APP" folder to highlight it (Only highlight it, do not open it) then touch "Edit" at top and touch "Copy"

Now touch twice where it has only "..." to get you back to the first page and Touch "HDD" twice to get to the hard drive page, then Touch "Edit" and touch "Paste" Touch ALL when you are asked to overwrite, It will take a little bit but you should see the screen flicker, this means its done copying the file, if you miss the flicker, you should wait 5 mins before proceding, this will give it enough time to copy.

Now you can turn the unit off, take out your SD card and turn the unit back on, And plug back in the USB cable, you should now have a Magellan OS that will let your computer see your 4250. You Should see a drive named TFAT that is your GPS.

Now Download http://www.offroadnuts.com/Mag4250.zip extract the files to a folder on your desktop. Then copy all the files from that folder to your 4250 ( drive TFAT ), click YES to overwrite files when asked.

****ONLY IF you have a "white screen" 4250 download the following file:
http://www.offroadnuts.com/GPSbackup.rar
un-rar to your desktop, then with your 4250 plugged in via USB, copy the files in GPSbackup directlly to the root of your GPS drive, this will put iGO8 with all updated maps, POI;s and such on your GPS, and there will no longer be a need to have your SD card in to run it.

You can now unplug the GPS from the computer, this will cause a reboot of the GPS and it should let you all the way into the Magellan menus or MioPocket (depending on what way you go... no s/n white screen OR factory Magellan GPS).

Let me know how ya make out.

Also, if anyone has an extra 4250 bricked or not, white screen or blue splash, you want to part with, I would like to do somemore research and experiment on it, I would like to get my hands on a unit with a s/n in it (blue Magellan splash screen at startup, not white) and figure out how to extract/duplicate the s/n file.

let me know

the s/n on my unit has disappeared.

Skunk - I can part with my unit if you want to run any tests on it. If you are in Boston, you can pick it up.

skunk,
Followed the procedure as outlined above for white screen, copied files from GPSbackup to TFAT root. ON reboot white screen to progress bar 100% to Warning screen, and then to sys settings. After a bit it begins to load Mio Pocket, scrolls down the activities then reboots to progress bar 100% and sits.
Any suggestions?
Thanx
Mike

Skunk,
Tried the hard reset, comes back to settings eventually...same as before. Redid the entire proceedure...but I maybe mistakenly used BL_1 for the UpDate OS (format HDD) step. Is this supposed to be done with BL_3 and then BL_1 and BL_2 just UpDate? Going to try to use BL_3 FIRST to format HDD.
Will get back with results.

Using BL_3 file resulted in "Cannot find OS image"
OOpppps sorry used wrong SD card. Duh!

Used BL_3 first then 1 and 2....then popped in the card with FileMan renamed to ToCopy (I made a card for each operation) and just get progress bar. Sorry, but what do you mean by "hard reboot"?
And when you UpDate OS and it asks you to Reboot...does that mean just shut off and turn back on? Sorry for lame questions.

During one of these sessions I do remember trying "Update Bootloader (Erase flash)...does that mean I erased the internal flash ROM? And is there any hope for this unit? I hate beating a dead horse. Besides...chores are beginning to pile up....lol.

I don't always agree with Gypsy (my GPS) but I don't have to sleep with her!

you did erace the entire internal flash drive by using that operation, I noticed a few times you mentioned "BL_1 or BL_3" but no mention of the MX files, you need both (MX_3.bin and BL_3.nb0) both 3's, then both 1's then both 2's, but only 2 at a time like this:
1. with the SD card in your PC, copy MX_3.bin and BL_3.nb0 to your SD card
2. insert SD card into GPS
3. press and hold reset and power to enter operations menu
4. select 'update OS', and press power button to execute update
5. go back to operations menu and select 'information' press and hold power button to shut off the GPS.
6. repeat steps 1-5 2 more times for MX_1.bin and BL_1.nb0 and MX_2.bin and BL_2.nb0
7. reinsert your SD card into your pc
8. copy the ENTIRE CONTENTS OF FileManCE2 folder (not the folder, the contents of the folder) to your SD card
9. rename FileMan to ToCopy
10. follow step 5 in my post, DO NOT PUT THE SD CARD BACK INTO YOUR UNIT UNTIL STEP 6 OF MY POST, AND MAKE SURE ALL FILES ARE ON THE CARD AND MODIFIED (if necessary)

let me know how that works... I tried again just now and it works fine for my white screen bricked 4250... well used to be bricked.
