According to their web site and confirmed by MSN direct support there is no more MSN Lifetime subscriptions. All they have is the yearly subscription for $49.

Ya... I read about that.
It kinda sucks that they stopped offering the Lifetime without warning.
I think $50 a year is pretty steep and I would not be willing to pay it for what they offer.
But even with the Lifetime sub, they didn't guarantee the service beyond the year 2014.
It make you wonder if they are going to abandon the service all togeather.
I find it strange that Garmin does not offer the ability to get the NuLink service and the MSN Direct/FM service as an optioin on their newest nuvi 1690.
But Garmin hyped up the XM NavTraffic a lot too for some of the StreetPilots and almost immediately dropped that service too.

So does that mean all the people who already paid for the lifetime need to start paying a monthly?

Oh my gosh... that blows! No notice. I just remembered yesterday that my free trial was about to end and was going to do the lifetime. I very expensive mistake! I called to see if I could convince them to give me a break. Nope! Sucks!

I just bought a onetime prepaid card at Best Buy and it activated with no problem. It looks like MSN Direct is not pulling the onetime cards from stores, as I was in two Best Buys in my area and they had plenty of them.

Did they have the card physically in the store or did you order it online from BB ?
I'll bet you paid the full price of $130. That stinks because MSN last offered it directly for $99.
But I may look around to see if I can find a card. Amazon shows them as unavailable.
Thanks |

Yes, they are physically in the store, and yes they are $130.00. Even if they're only good til 2014, you still save about thirty bucks. A hundred would have been nice but I don't think you'll find any at that price.

So I've searched this forum for discussion on the likely life of MSN Direct vs Garmin's Nulink product. I'm guessing Nulink will eventually replace the other. But I can't find any discusion on this. Is that because no one knows? Obviously it may not be worth $130 if the service is only offered for another year.

Here's an update. Today I went back to Best Buy in Trumbull CT and the onetime MSN is marked down to $65.00, the one year was marked down to $25.00. I showed them my reciept and they made the adjustment. Now for $65.00 it's a good deal even if it only lasts for three years.

Wow $65 is a good deal for lifetime. I wonder if all Best Buy stores are selling it for that price?

They were NOT available at my local (Poway, Near San Diego, CA). They only had the yearly subscription card for $49.95. As my 1-yr. trail recently expired, I was thinking about the $99 lifetime (or 5 year, whatever) and debating rather or not the service was worth that! It now appears that my decision has been made. It looks like I just have a second expensive power cord with a pretty green LED, since I know I won't spring for $50 for a single year of MSN service!
Oh, and for what it was worth, the 1 year cards were NOT with the GPS units, but were with the satellite radio subscription cards, go figure!
