As already introduced here, the latest beta FW of Colorado, Oregon and Dakota now supports custom raster maps.
I would like to introduce here the new free tool OziMapToKMZ. It was developed by KlaMa, based on discussions from Slovak forum www.gpsforum.sk. The last versions are multilanguage.
Features: - Creates KMZ from OziExplorer maps, which have bitmap in JPG, PNG or BMP format. - Bitmap is converted to JPG before inserting it into KMZ - Splits the source bitmap to tiles. Number of tiles (rows and columns) can be adjusted and tile size is displayed. - Allows to store the whole map in one JPG too. - Multilanguage interface. Translation to English and Czech languages is already included. For many other languages tool offers button [Google Translate]. - The source OziExplorer map should be oriented to north. Map rotation is not supported. If your map requires rotation, please use the free tool MapEdit++, see http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=130525&whichpage=2. Alternatively, you can use Map Merge for OziExplorer, load your map into it, save a rectangular selection and convert resulting OZFX3 back to PNG. See the last posts in this page bellow. - JPG compression quality is adjustable - JPG tiles are stored to KMZ without zip compression, as recommended by TRAILTECH
Download link: http://mozigo.zubor.net/uploaded/Ozi...mz_uni_lng.ZIP
http://mozigo.zubor.net/uploaded/OziMapToKmz_uni_lng.ZIP
Please try it and let us know your experiences and suggestions. I will communicate them with author.
Planned to be available today evening: - Adjustment of DrawOrder - Adjustmnet of opacity (currently shown in Google Earth only) |

I tried to slice a OZI map from Portugal. It seems there is a bug that does not create the proper kmz data. The problem is the EAST coordinates on kml file. If a Whole Map is generated, EAST coorinates are 0, and EAST coordinate on Region tab also. If Split map generation is used, the Boxes are not sliced correctly. They act as if the WEST to EAST slice coordinates end on EAST 0 also. This can be easily checked on GE by opening the file. NORTH and SOUTH are correct, but the overlay goes all the way from the WEST map limit to Greenwich direction. This can be a E/W problem on source code... Positive/Negative.... |

xeriph, thank you for testing! Please try update from the same link http://mozigo.zubor.net/uploaded/OziMapToKmz_uni_lng.zip
-1.0.0.8 Update - corrected bug when using west and south coordinates - added possibility to adjust DrawOrder - added possibility to adjust Opacity (it's seen only in Google Earth, not in Garmin device)

Buffy, thanks for feedback. It seems it works well for your region. :)
But there is yet one known bug in evaluating longitude coordinates. It will be fixed today evening (CET). |

I've tried the latest version on my maps. The kmz output by this program does not correctly line up in Google Earth - (the top of the map is roughly 0.5km too far east; it's not so far out at the bottom and there's also some latitudinal error). It's probably to do with my particular datums and projections.
In oziexplorer they are set to Ordnance Survey Great Britain (OSGB) for the datum and British National Grid (BNG) for the projection.
Thanks for making such a utility available for free! |

DavidW: Try to follow the steps from the post http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=130392 If you find, that your map requires rotation, then it is not suitable for OziMapToKMZ.
One hint, which should help in such case: Load your map into Map Merge for OziExplorer. Make a rectangular selection in the Source Map tab and select Mercator projection and WGS-84 datum in the Destination Map tab. The resulting map should be then suitable for OziMapToKMZ.

I've already tried the manual way. It works but is a bit fiddly - I wanted to do the conversion programatically to guarantee consistency.
I started on your hint. Using the Mercator projection, Mapmerge creates a map which appears slightly rotated. So far so good.
But then I discover that Mapmerge only outputs image files in the ozfx3 format and oziexplorer won't output a bitmap from one of these maps if they have been created using Mapmerge.
So I end up with an ozfx3 map that looks right but your conversion utility needs it in a bitmap or JPEG format. |

No problem with that (hopefully).
You have these possibilities:
1) If you have OziExplorer PC, use File -> Save Map to Image File -> Color Image. You can choose PNG or BMP format. EDIT: Not possible for maps created by Map Merge. 2) If you haven't OziExplorer PC, you can do the same with free DeMapper: http://www.terraperfecta.com/demapper.php.
Then open the .MAP file in a text editor and substitute the image name in the 3rd line (use the just saved PNG/BMP file instead of OZFX3). |

When trying File -> Save Map to Image File -> Color Image Oziexplorer responds with a dialogue box saying "Maps created by Mapmerge cannot be saved to other formats".
I've tried deMapper but it crashes every time - even with my other maps not created by Mapmerge.

@DawidW : Use MapEdit. It is simple, and usually succesfull way. 1.Open MapEdit. 2.Open Flie> load your map. 2a. Set scale to real. ( 1:50000 if map is in 1:50000) . MEdit opens map in another scale. 3.Export > OziExplorer Exported file is properly oriented, and ready to use in OziMapToKMZ. Christopher |

OK, I forgot, that OziExplorer really denies to do that with map created by MapMerge. DeMapper should be able to do that. May be your map is too big for DeMapper to operate correctly. You can try yet the command line tool ozf2img. You can download it from http://bogi.gpsforum.sk/tools/ozf2img.rar Place it in the same directory, where you have the map file and the ozfx3 file. Use it in Command Prompt window. The syntax is: ozf2img -i<file>.map
Example:
D:\mapy\Ozi\LC>ozf2img -i4x3_13-10_ozf.map
OZF to PNG Converter v1.1 beta (15.12.2006)
Written in SPb specially for 4x4 users :)
Processing Ozi Explorer map file: 4x3_13-10_ozf.map
Processing map image: 4x3_13-10.ozfx3
Pass 1: determining key
Pass 2: determining encryption depth
Encryption depth: 16
Pass 3: 100% decompressed
Pass 4: Saving PNG
D:\mapy\Ozi\LC> |
