Amazon has the new Roadmate 1700 with a 7" screen for $255. Was thinking this might be a nice platform to run OziExplorer CE. Anybody play with one of these yet? Do we know if the "tocopy.exe" trick works on this series? On the Maestro 5310 I just re-named the Ozi executable to this and it works fine.
Any reviews or detailed specs yet? I have not found much. In one place I read the screen was 800x480 but not sure if that is correct. |

Answering my own question....
I decided to pick up a 1700 and take a chance with unlocking it. After a bit of trial and error, I was able to install the newest MioPocket release (see: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=126303) using the modification to unit.xml described in this thread: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=127618
quote: <Application ID="177"> <FileName>MioAutoRun.exe</FileName> <Path>\SDMMC\</Path> <Bitmap>32x32x16.bmp</Bitmap> <Version> <Major>2</Major> <Minor>46</Minor> <Internal>46</Internal> <Build>0</Build> </Version> </Application>
Application ID 177 already existed in the unit.xml file so I tried using some different ID's and had problems. Finally I just replaced the existing 177 with the one above and it worked. I need to look at this a little more closely - it also starts the onetouch application which puts its icon in the corner of the screen covering up other things. Messing around running Miopocket, I used the task manager to kill that application, but I think it will be better for my purposes to not start it in the first place since it isn't needed.
When installing MioPocket, I used the SD card version following the instructions for the Magellan Maestro series in the ReadMe file. Specifically, "...rename Magellan_AutoRun.inf to GS399AutoRun.inf." The Roadmate 1700 did not recognize the special filename tocopy.exe like my Maestro, which will boot into any program with that name on the SD card.
I would still like to find a way to do something like this on the Roadmate. Does anyone know of a special filename on this series which will do this? Makes it very easy to install OziExplorer without changing anything on the unit itself.
Have only gone out for one drive running Ozi and this unit, but I really like it so far. The 7" screen is just beautiful on this model, and while it is large, it's very thin and light. The specs only claim 1/2 hour runtime on battery, but it still nice that they include batteries for brief use on a big screen unit. I have not really used the native Magellan software at all, and probably never will since I am developing pretty nice coverage of my area in seamless Ozi aerial photography and USGS 24k topo maps.

Yes, 800x480. That is the same as my old iPAQ, but the screen is physically twice the size. On the iPAQ, text in WinCE applications was too small to read. On the Magellan it's a reasonable size. Really nice hardware. Since Mitac bought Magellan, I wonder if this is the same hardware as the 7" Mio they were selling in other countries?
Thanks for that link, will have to see if it works.

Hah - iboot.exe does indeed work! Thanks for pointing me to that. OziExplorer will start right up if you name it that. I was hoping that it might run faster booting directly into the program without loading all the MioPocket stuff, but performance feels about the same.
The Roadmate 1700 has about 3x the number of pixels as my Maestro 5310, and Ozi takes about twice as long to zoom or scroll the screen as it did on my 5310. I guess it's pushing the limit of this little processor.
I am very impressed with how quickly this unit acquires satellite signal, MUCH faster than the 5310, and also locks in immediately inside the house, which the 5310 has trouble with. |

I am very glad it works!
Since you can run any program on your 1700, I would hope you have some program, which can tell us about CPU (how fast?) and other components. Can you get this info to satisfy our curiosity....
What's the Windows, CE 5.0? This info is usually printed on the back side of the unit, next to serial number, etc.

According to WR Tools:
Windows CE 5.0 ARM926EJ S3C2450 (400mhz) 800x480 @ 65536 colors 124MB RAM
These photos of OziExplorer and MioPocket were taken with my little Canon Elph and don't really do justice to the beautiful screen, but they will give you a little idea of what it looks like.

Comparison: Previous Magellan with 800x480 screen is Maestro 4370 and it has 124MB RAM too. However, the 4370 has more powerful CPU (ARM1136JF-S TN2X0A) capable of working at 600 MHz. A lower resolution brother of 4370 is Maestro 4350, it has the same powerful CPU as the 4370 to run same multiple applications, but WR Tools repots that RAM is much smaller (it says 57.5 MB...)
Pictures look nice. Empty space between icons is huge compared to what I see on a 4.3" screen...
Charge your RoadMate!!!.. :)

Yes, I am not so happy with the speed of the 1700 when running OziExplorer. It really struggles to update the screen when driving fast, and there is a lag between tapping a button and getting a response. It's worth it for the beautiful image, but I sure wish it were faster. |

Have logged a few more miles with the 1700, and have come to the conclusion that it runs a little faster if I boot directly into OziExplorer instead of running Ozi with MioPocket. So I have simply re-named OziexplorerCE.exe to iboot.exe, and the Magellan starts the program up immediately following the Magellan logo display. When I quit from Ozi, I get a blank white screen, but it doesn't seem to be much of a problem; I just slide the power switch off.
It seems to update the screen a little more smoothly, zooming is a bit faster and the touchscreen seems a little more responsive when I run it this way. Not a big difference, but every little bit helps. This also has the advantage that I can boot into the Magellan software by just removing the memory card. |

I got RM 1700 today, used the same trick and unlocked it. I loaded iGo8 with Maestro 4370 skin from SD card. So, RM 1700 looks and behaves like my favorite Maestro.
First impressions: Picture is a bit stretched horizontally, but OEM map/picture seems to be stretched even more… Screen update is relatively smooth under highway speeds, but a bit slower compared to Maestro 4350. Zooming in and out is fast, but, in comparison, a bit slower too…

For anyone else who wants to run MioPocket on the 1700, here's a quick update. Disregard my earlier post about editing unit.xml, that is not really needed and I think it's much safer not to mess with any files in internal memory.
Download the current MioPocket release and follow the instructions in paragraph 4D of the release notes for installing on the Magellan Maestro with the following modification. __________________________________________________________________________
Copy MioAutoRun.exe, MioAutoRun.mscr, MortScript.exe and Magellan_AutoRun.inf to the root of your SD card. Rename MioAutoRun.exe to iboot.exe and MioAutoRun.mscr to iboot.mscr __________________________________________________________________________
That's all you need to do. I also found that some things which didn't work properly with my earlier installation method seemed to be OK now. If you want the option to run the native Magellan software under MioPocket, you just need to run the MgnShell.exe program. It is a little hard to get out of the Magellan software after starting it however because the icon in the upper right of the screen is covered by the "one touch" button. I found that starting the program using FilemanCE was a little better because you have a bigger icon for closing the program. I did not do any real testing of this however.
I am not all that interested in MioPocket on my 1700, just OziExplorer. So I have not done much other than to confirm that MioPocket works as expected. But maybe this info will help somebody else? Have fun! |

Have already installed MioPocket? If not, just follow the instructions for the Maestro in the README file.
MioPocket doesn't really have anything to do with maps, so not sure what you want. If you want to install additional navigation software you will need to purchase it. |

There are two detailed threads about 4370 unlock, pl.search this site, the approach is not the same as one for the 1700. I've done it successfully. |

That is why I said to follow the instructions in the MioPocket readme file. They say: ______________________________________________________________________
Magellan Maestro: Copy MioAutoRun.exe, MioAutoRun.mscr, MortScript.exe and Magellan_AutoRun.inf to the root of your SD card and rename Magellan_AutoRun.inf to GS399AutoRun.inf. If that does not work, rename MioAutoRun.exe to ToCopy.exe and MioAutoRun.mscr to ToCopy.mscr ______________________________________________________________________
Doesn't one of these techniques work? I have a Maestro 5310 and it will boot from a file named ToCopy.exe. Regardless... you are right, this question should not have been posted to a thread about unlocking the 1700. |
