So I got the software only version of Copilot live and was really exicted to test it with my sleeves and BT GPS recievers of my 5450. Guess what....cant do anything because of the new activation keeps failing. Quality product. You buy it and cant use it or get support at any other time than 9-5 M-F. Seems to me if you require activation to use the product, you should have 24 hour 7 days a week support.
This better be the best software ever or its going back and im sticking to Mapopolis.

First one with CoPilot Live! Does it seem the problem is with the activation servers? Does it require that you have an ActiveSync session running like Navman's SmartST Pro? Hope they can resolve this tomorro and please keep us posted!

You can register either online using the serial code and activation code that is shown on the Copilot registration screen, or you can register using activesync connection and the process provided by copilot. Neither works. I wonder if its because the product is so new and the online registration is not running for this current product.
Well I have read the manual ( all 6 pages) and I am excited to play around with it.
Well see on monday i guess.

Well....Its working.....And so far looks very good. The travroute people were very good at helping me with getting it on line and now I am going to give it a test.
PS It works great with my Socket BT GPS.
Will write a review tonight! |

Great, I'm jealous! What I saw at CeBIT was indeed very promising. One aspect I couldn't really evaluate was the map refresh (characters remaingn without a zoom) which I found a bit disappointing in v3.

| I just saw a motorhome driving around in California, pulling a trailer with Travroute Copilot signage on it. I wonder if that's what they use to update their map database? |

Copilot Live – Pocket PC 4
I have owned every version of the pocket pc Copilot Software from version 1. There have been some great times, and some awful times. But I always find myself returning to the Travroute Software. The general idea that an IPAQ and a sleeve would suit all of my needs for instant directions appeared the perfect solution for all of my business travels. Copilot version 2 with the sleeve worked great, but the mapping was generally fair at best. I then purchased version 3 and a new sleeve and loved how much faster the software and sleeve acquired its position. But the maps still were poor and generally the overall experience was lacking. Note that I have been trying to find a solution like the Hertz Never lost system for a few years. So I then tried the destinator product and generally disliked the interface even though the mapping seemed more up to date. Finally, I purchased the socket BT GPS and tried Mapopolis. It was awesome as the speed seemed to be the fastest at acquiring a signal and getting you on your way. But the dreaded interface was almost useless for me. So when Copilot announced that the newest version would support other GPS units, I knew I had to at least give it a shot.
So here are my thoughts on the Software and New Features through some light testing.
My Configuration –
Ipaq 5450 (BT,WLAN) 256Mb San disk SD Card Cigarette Cradle (awesome) Socket BT GPS CF Sleeve W/Extended Battery Sprint PCS Yiso CF Wireless Card
Installation –
As with all the Copilot Products, there is a desktop version of the software and a pocket pc version. The install for the desktop and pocket pc was smooth, although the full installation does require about 800 megs of free space on the desktop machine. A simple sync with my IPAQ loaded the Copilot software.
I launched the desktop version and quickly noticed the change in interface. The software now appears to with a tool bar on the side of the map. A few shortcuts point to the newer features including the “Live” option. I quickly created a map for the Midwest (about 4 states) and completed the wizard option. The wizard is much better as it shows the area that is selected and the points of interest as well. Additionally, when the wizard completed, it offered to move the data to my storage card. As with the rest of Copilot versions, the option to add the entire country highway layer was available as well. Once the data was moved to my SD card, I inserted it into the Ipaq and launched the new program.
Upon launching the software on the Ipaq, it ask for activation, either manually or while connected through active sync. I did have a few problems with the activation, but it was eventually solved with a call to the support staff.
After my software was activated, I turned on my BT GPS and then used the autoscan ability of copilot to find my GPS. Worked like a champ. Within seconds my position was found even sitting inside my house with the GPS on the window ledge. Awesome!! Next was to play around with the Live interface. Since I was still in my house, I used the WLAN and connected the IPAQ to the internet. I then used my desktop pc to contact the Pocket PC. When the two contacted each other, my position was then displayed on the desktop version of the software. I then sent a message from my pc to the IPAQ and then responded back using the IPAQ. Very cool addition to the software, but I am not sure how practical.
So now it was time to head to the car. I grabbed the CF Sleeve and Sprint wireless card and hopped into the car. I left my roommate watching my desktop pc and got started. First I soft reset the IPAQ to see how quickly the GPS would acquire a signal. In less than 3 seconds my position appeared on the screen. Next I typed in my work address and started driving.
The new driving screen is much better than the previous versions. First it displays the map and allows you to configure the other information displayed on the screen. I use Cross Street and MPH. But you can also pick time of day or elevation.
With previous versions of the software, you were never given a choice to define how you wish to drive. This version allows for quickest route or shortest route. And it actually works. I drive on the highway to work, but the most direct route never approaches the highway. I was very pleased to see this feature working correctly.
Once I started driving, a message appeared on the screen. It was my roommate telling me that I was speeding! That was funny. Since I was connected to the internet with the Sprint card, all of my information was being relayed back to my home pc.
The directions were very accurate and took me to my destination without any problems. The voice notified me when to exit and gave me a heads up that my destination was on the left side of the road. This is great when you are traveling and you want to locate the destination, but can not find any address posted on the building.
Once I arrived, I decided to switch the mode from navigation to walking. I got out of the car and typed the address of a bar about 2 blocks away. While it quickly computed my path, I was surprised to see that it had me walk through the hockey arena to get to my destination. Either it does not know the arena is there, (been here for 3 years) or it assumed that I was really good at walking through solid objects! Well you cant win them all!
For first impressions, this is quality software. The routing is much better than in previous versions. The ability to use other GPS units has finally put this software in first place in my mind. The live features, while very cool, will not be used due to the general cost of keeping a data connection open. But a great idea. I will write a more complete review after I get out on the road and get to test this in several states.

I didn't have a chance to take a photo. The motorhome was in Granite Bay, CA yesterday. Too bad the map updates are only once a year. Whatever they might have been updating isn't going to appear until CoPilot 5. |

Having been using it for just one day, I can say that I miss the "where are you driving to" information that used to be in the drivers screen. At the bottom of the screen on V3.0, at least to the best of my recollection it would present Time to Arrive at "destination" which was the one that was listed in the mapping field. Now, I cannot seem to find that. A second issue is I was really hoping that the screen would indeed be in Blue, and not Black which it is. The whole thing seems to be a bit darker than before. I'll post a larger review later. N |

Thanks for the reviews! I'm still waiting for mine to arrive. On the display being black vs blue, I've noticed that the newer transreflective displays are SO bright compared to reflective ones. At night, the blue screens are still too bright. I've been wanting to see black screens used more, but I'll have to see CoPilot before commenting more.
Does this new version have a Night Mode?
All in all I'm looking forward to playing!

nickgps - I believe that the ETA and DTG appear at the bottom of the screen at all times:
and that one of the lines above that info is "tappable"
How are you guys finding the "real waypoint" (it used to be a stop)feature to work?

There are indeed two items which are "tappable" on the bottom left, for MPG, Atl, Current City, Current Street, Time, maybe another, but no Destination. The bottom one, continues to show ETA
And, I don't see that the screen is blue. I know these pretty graphics show that, but they are all black on my 3850, no differance b/w Bottom lines and background. Anyone notice this too, or could I have done a whacked install? |
