Does any other GPS software work with the kit? It would be great if Navigon worked. There has been some talk that Apple required the kit to work with other software, but I don't think this has been verified.

Yes, no problem so far with other software, although as I mentioned at the end of the review, there are no tools to verify where you are getting your GPS signal from, but by pulling out the plug (and therefore "turning off" the features of the car kit) it loses the fix and starts searching for a position again, most likely using the internal receiver.

Yes I've been wondering about that too, no iPod Touch handy unfortunately, might be able to do that at the end of the month.

Did some first GPS performance testing at the usual spot (see (cf http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/articles.asp?id=175&page=9) and the results of the car kit (track in red) are very good, on par with other SiRFstarIII based receivers. On the other hand the internal receiver (track in green) clearly shows its limits, poor resolution (roundabout "erased") and poor sensitivity (no tracking )underground passage). Note that I don't have two iPhones for simultaneous testing so the two tracks were recorded a few minutes apart to rule out any variation in the satellite configuration.

Available now according to clubtomtom !

Did quite a bit of driving over the week-end and I'm still very happy with the kit, turns the iPhone 3GS into an excellent guide, much more than the "backup" I'd known till then.

Like all other GPS systems it fails (inaccurate guidance) when placed right behind the powerful coated windshield of the Citroen C5v1 but placed on the side it does fine :

Only slightly off-topic but related: With the nuviphone designed first as a navigator with the phone apparently a second thought, it would be interesting to see a comparative track with the iPhone. Curious if any current phones can be "tuned" to perform as well as a standalone GPS without resorting to additional gps hardware, ie the TomTom car kit.

If Garmin France ever send me a test unit I'll certainly run sole comparisons, but I don't see what type of tuning could ne done at the use level, it really comes down to the decisions made when the device was designed. The TomTom car is a rather extreme "tuning" but it works well.

Their denial was justified, it doesn't work. Two problems : it's too short and it is not powered by the mount, so there might some issues with the wiring/connector, here are the pictures :

[ed] Are you using the Navigon GPS app with the TomTom mounting kit? The comments at various forums always seem to hedge a bit, even the Apple Web Store that sells the kit won't commit!! I don't get any direct help on this from Navigon, who actually suggests not to buy the kit (possibly a self-serving answer). I have decided simply to purchase the kit on 14 day trial and test this myself.

I am and it works perfectly, as I explained in the review in the first message here, the GPS module in the car kit simply adds a location source so any application can use it.
