I was able to unbrick n765t by pulling battery cord out. WebUpdater shoved available update for chip set type m. Downloaded it, took a little longer to hook up to satellites, now running fine for 10 min.

@ bratvas
If you have disabled the two files I mentioned ealier, WebUpdater will report the "GPS Chipset Type M" update even if one has not officially been released.
If you have not done so, this may indeed be the fix. |

@ bratvas
This is NOT the fix. I renamed my files back to default and WebUpdater did NOT find a GPS Chipset Type M update. After I renamed the files, the "Updating GPS chipset" message returned repeatedly on the unit.
I would disable the files again until word comes that the fix has been released. With the files at their default names, & the repeated "Updating GPS chipset" message occurring, you run the risk of the unit bricking, although you have managed to do the battery disconnect to "fix" it again if it happens. |

I got through to the Garmin telephone support in 30 mins earlier this afternoon and was told that:
1. my highly coincidental problems with nuvi 770 are, according to the CS rep, in no way related to the problems with several 7X5 models
2. they still do not know, as of this afternoon, what's caused this huge mess (chip, S/W, F/W, date problem, FastFixII(?), ...)
3. kindly gave me a RMA for an out-of-warranty unit (would get a refurb unit with a 90-day warranty); will have to think about it...

| Actually, i did not renamed the files back-just decided to play it safe until it's confirmed the fix is available.Garmin is in no rush. Anybody got an idea how many 7xx units sold so far? Just interesting to know. |

| Update is now available via MyGarmin & WebUpdater. Who wants to be the first to try it? |

| How do you get the unit to power on to get to the new firmware? I tried the reset procedure but that didn't do anything... |

| Well...I don't know if I was first or not...but the deed is done. My 765t bricked yesterday....couldn't turn it on any which way...so today, off to the store to buy a T5 driver and I was able to unplug the battery...as soon as I put it back together it turned on...just did the "upgrade" from "My Dashboard" and all seems well...at least it's not a doorstop anymore. Glad I didn't have to send it in and wait forever. |

| You have to open the unit...this is discussed earlier in this topic and there's a link to a video showing it done....basically, you take out the 2 screws with a T5 driver and then carefully with some type of plastic tool (so you don't scratch the case) you pry the case open. Once open, just unplug the battery...wait 30 seconds and plug it back in...close up the case (don't pinch the wires!) and re-install the two screws...I then hooked up the USB before I turned it on and went right to the update. Good Luck. |
