Updated 20090504 - This is now confirmed, Navigon USA are laying off most of their staff and will only keep operations running to support existing models. This likely means new maps via the FreshMaps subscriptions, it's unlikely the 7310 software update will be made available for the 7210 model though...
Original Post : Can't name my source, but Navigon US has closed nearly its entire North American offices, employees are laid off and there will be no spring product launches. |

A bit like the Mio USA scenario then? That is certainly bad news and though the economy is bad GPS sales are still progressing in the US compared to Europe. I suppose its Garmin and TomTom reaping the benefits of that then...
If confirmed, I wonder what this is going to do to Navigon in general since they were bought over by a US fund a couple of years ago... |

| maybe this would not happen if they sell their products on Bestbuy, walmart, frys, target, etc. Tomtom and Garmin are selling everywhere! |

GPS Business News has confirmation here.
NAVIGON’s CEO Egon Minar spoke this morning to GPS Business News: “Due to the difficult economic environment and the aggressive pricing we have decided to withdraw from the PND business in North America for the time being. We are however not closing down our Chicago office which will continue to serve our automotive and mobile phone businesses in North America.”
Egon Minar did not detail how many people are affected by this downsize, but it is a “significant number of people in our Chicago office”, he said. Only a few people will remain to take care of the existing PND customers: “we will continue to fulfill all obligations to our existing PND customers in terms of map update, etc.”, he added. |

Thanks, I had pinged someone I know there, no answer, maybe he's already gone...

| This is a real disappointment as I think that Navigon has the best system out there. I just bought one to use as my "standard". I tried calling some of my contacts, but no answer from anyone. In the US our choices are narrowing pretty quickly and it looks as if it may be a Garmin world over here. |

What mobile phone business? Is Navigon NA perhaps going to release their PDA/phone version of MN7 here in the States?
Just wondering. I'd rather have the 7310T software upgrade.... |

| This is pretty big.... go out and look at navigon.com.... there is no mention of PND devices at all.... in fact the icon showing automotive gps pnd is blurred out.... its history..... too bad i really liked my 2100max |

| This comes as a shock! The only decent GPS brand and it's gone. Does that mean we will never see 7300T in the stores? |

So what does this mean to those who purchased lifetime traffic, map updates, etc? (That's a rhetorical question unless someone here has inside information ) |

Traffic is an onboard licence, so that's ok, map updates via FreshMaps, well unless they buy out the contracts (ViaMichelin did that in France by refunding everyone) they'll have to keep on providing them, shouldn't be too hard since they still need updated maps for their "other products".
@XxhaimBondxX - Still lined up for release in Europe...

| I'm going down with the ship and will be using it until it dies. If the traffic updates available, even better. |

| Do you think that any purchase of fresh maps made from now will be honored? |
