Basecamp downloaded from my A10 the gmapprom.img file with the Europen maps in it, but it completely ignored the gmapsupp.img file on the SD card containing the US maps. How do I force it to get also the US maps?

I have updated my maps and also installed them on my computer. But that is not what the screenshots above show. In BaseCamp I see TWO listings for City Navigator 2011.2. One of them is the map installed on my computer's hard drive. The other is the map on the Nuvi, which is being accessed via the USB connection. Note the map properties tab shown above that indicates the source of the map is J:\.SYSTEM\gmapprom.img. This is the map stored in the hidden system folder on the Nuvi.

Also note how the City Navigator map is shown as part of the contents of the Nuvi 3790. From what I gather, you don't see anything like this with your unit. As to "why".... can't help you there I'm afraid.

No . . . i understood well and i am not speaking of apples nor oranges :-)

i just wrote the Garmin Italy answer (i don't Know if it's right or not ) :

ITALIAN :
Gentile Cliente,

ENGLISH by Google Translator :
Dear Customer,
Thank you for contacting Technical Support for Garmin.
If the map is not installed on your PC, the maps contained in the Nuvi does not
can definitely be handled by the software in question.
And 'that is found correct as the ability to manage only traces
and watpoint.
When you buy a map update and install maps
on the PC then it can manage.

Which proves again the the Italian customer service should be shot on the spot, branco di incapaci...

Smiley,

At the risk of stirring the mud, I'm stumbling over the term "download" in your post about the A10. As I'm sure you know, the maps in a GPS device do not get "downloaded" to your computer when using BaseCamp. In the left pane, BC shows what devices are connected and shows their contents, including routes, tracks, waypoints ... and maps.

So even if there are no maps at all installed on your computer, BC will show its "Global map" (base map) until you connect a device with maps, at which point you can choose from them.

Are we talking about the same thing? Is there any problem getting the SD card to show up on your computer, with no software running?

The second time, I had to wait about 10 seconds, before it allowed me to use the CNNT EU maps.

To me that means that the first time BC took some data (quite a lot, given it uses USB 2.0 speeds) from the A10, to keep it on the computer when needed. Downloading, caching, tomato, tomato...

OTGH, it completely ignored the gmapsupp.img on the SD card, containing the CNNT NA maps. And, yes, I can access the SD card without a problem, to get the "gmapsupp.img" name correctly I cut and pasted it from Windows Explorer and, moreover, BC looks all over the SD card to find photos and videos to place them on the map...

Ten minutes? Is the EU map that huge? CN NT NA took about 3 minutes for that first transfer, then only a few seconds for subsequent sessions. No idea what gets cached, but I do know it isn't enough to display or create routes without the GPS connected.

As for your card, does it appear in the left pane of BC? Can you open it there and "force" the caching operation? When I open the micro-SD card in my zumo using BC it reveals all content -- maps, routes, tracks, waypoints.

Directory di I:\.System

Directory di H:\Garmin
04/06/2011 10.55 1.472.069.632 gmapsupp.img

You know, we started building roads in 753BC, while you started in 1492AD, we have got an headstart of about 21 centuries...

EDIT: As for the SD card, as I have already told you, yes, it appears on the panel on the left, there is a progress bar, it finds all the photos and videos on the card, places them on the map, and it does not find the CNNT NA map.

EDIT2: if you are going to ask if the A10 sees the CNNT NA Map correctly, I just checked, it does. I just looked at the parking lot of the Florida Mall in Orlando, FL, and I doubt that it appears in the BaseMap (51MB, BTW)...

Funny, the same words used by the representative from Garmin Italia Customer service.

"Uninstall BC and reinstall it..."

Too bad I had installed it from scratch five minutes before it ignored the CNNT NA maps while gobbling the CNNT EU Maps...
