| Thanks for sharing, moved to the News sections and I added the notes from the Garmin site. I spoke with Garmin at a tradeshow in France on Friday and they explained that MapSource was going to be discontinued and replaced by BaseCamp, at least as far as "Topo" use goes since it can't read non-DEM maps. |

What's particularly nice is that if you own a Dakota, Oregon or Colorado with the most recent application update, the sat imagery offered by BirdsEye is available for use within BaseCamp without a subscription. Just can't transfer the satellite imagery to your device without subscribing. You can even transfer a sample, lower-res image as a test to see how it does on your compatible Garmin handheld.
Now here's another really cool upgrade of BaseCamp, and it applies even to Nuvi owners (Thanks Boyd!): BaseCamp can use the maps pre-loaded to your device for trip planning. The transfer to BaseCamp may not be quick, particularly for City Navigator's 2GB mapset. But now owners of the Oregon 400's with included maps (except those in the 400c) and Garmin nuvis can make use of the on-board maps on their computer. A nice little Easter Egg from Garmin. |

| That's interesting, so I take it you have to connect your GPS to your PC ? The Colorado isn't listed in the compatibility list so that's good news for those who own one. I hadn't installed v3.01 yet, here we go ! |

Correct, just be sure the latest application update has been applied.
continued: One caveat. There's a bug in BaseCamp that may keep the street names from showing. Garmin is aware. |

Gator is right. Plug the Nuvi into your PC and start Basecamp. It will identify the gmapprom.img file on the Nuvi and process it. Actually Gator, it did not take very long - less than 10 minutes. It took quite a bit longer to process the US Topo map on my Oregon. If you have an older Nuvi with USB 1.0, I suspect this feature won't be very useful, since it needs to read the map directly from the memory on the Nuvi and the slow interface will make that painful.
But with my Nuvi 1350 I was able to use the map to compute routes, and BaseCamp also displayed the Favorites that were stored on the Nuvi. To be clear: the map files are still stored on the GPS itself. They are not copied to your computer.

Also Gator, the bug isn't in Basecamp. The bug appears to be in the firmware update for the Oregon x00, and possibly the Dakota firmware as well. Street names are not displayed with Garmin's vector based maps. This does not affect their appearance in Basecamp, just on the GPS itself. |

| Thanks for the clarification Boyd. Explains why I didn't notice the missing street names myself. |

Actually that is interesting Gator. Over at Groundspeak there are Dakota users reporting the missing street name bug, and it appears to be universal across the entire Oregon-Dakota-Colorado lines.
Meanwhile, on Garmin's own forum, Vista 32 users are having problems with the new version. It works fine for me on Vista 64. |

| I'm seeing street names on my Dakota on both my CNNT and 3rd party Florida 24K Topo. Is the issue only with transferred maps from BaseCamp after the updates? |

Garmin is aware of the missing names (actually there are no text labels of any kind on my US Topo map) and will look into it on Monday.
I was able to download a 124 MB BirdsEye image in BaseCamp last night without a subscription, and it looks very nice. Attempting to send to my Oregon, it offered to transfer a small 1 square mile demo since I don't have a subscription. This worked fine, and looks good on the GPS too. There were a few rough edges in the process, but they are off to a good start for a new product.
I will probably subscribe soon, after some of these initial bugs are fixed. On the GPS, the BirdsEye file has a .JNX extension. |

Got a chance to use the new version too and did get the map on my old nuvi 660 "integrated" automatically into BaseCamp 3.01. I wrote "integrated" because it seems to transfer an "overview" of the map (that took a few minutes, done in the background) but when you zoom in or pan around it still needs to access the maps on the nuvi. And when you disconnect the nuvi the maps goes away.
As for the BirdsEye/DigitalGlobe maps the process is pretty smooth indeed, you highlight the area you want to download (three resolutions : standard/high/highest) with "highest" being close to what you get on Google Earth it seems. Paying $25 for the convenience seems to be pretty reasonable over using free tools like SnaptoMap or OziMaptoKMZ, especially for inexperienced users. |

PS i installed latest City Navigator NT Europe 2011.20 on the Nuvi |

That's odd, I'll connect my nuvi 3790t to my computer and run BaseCamp to see what happens!
By the way, a v3.06 update is available, see details on Garmin's site.
quote: * Added support for the GB Discoverer series of products. * Added support for the City Navigator Israel series of products. * Improved memory usage when drawing maps. * Improved auto routing calculation speed. * Improved address searching when searching near 'center of map'. * Improved indexing of map products installed on devices or SD cards. * Changed error reporting for imported files. * Fixed issue when rendering the '&' sign on map labels. * Fixed startup issue related to diacritics or the German Eszett in the database. * Fixed startup issues related to bad 3d settings. * Fixed errors that could occur when changing filtered route settings in the middle of creating a route. * Fixed errors when editing geotagged photos. * Fixed input of custom grid values. * Fixed issues that could happen when changing the map font. * Fixed issues that would result in sections of the map missing when using an NT map product. * Fixed issues when changing datum and grid
