quote: Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, today announced the first portable navigation device designed exclusively for over the road long-haul navigation and delivery trucks – the nüvi® 465T. This new long-haul navigator introduced at the Mid America Truck Show March 19-21, 2009, supports multiple truck profiles and features advanced routing and guidance to support truck-related road restrictions such as height, width, length, weight and hazardous materials. Simply enter the truck’s dimensions and load restrictions and the nüvi 465T will adjust many routes based on the customized truck profile and map data available to best meet the specified requirements...
...For the ultimate in convenience, the nüvi 465T is the first navigational device to provide locations in the National Truck and Trailer Services (NTTS) Breakdown Directory, a comprehensive guide to semi-truck repair facilities nationwide – including those offering 24-hour road service. With more than 30,000 repair and heavy duty towing services for the continental United States, this preloaded guide allows drivers to easily find truck-specific points of interest, such as truck repair, towing and recovery, tire sales and repair, glass repair, fuels stops and more.

Here's what the press release linked above says, "The nuvi 465T has a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $499.99 and is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2009."

| I'm wondering overpass height data can (or will be) correctly implemented. Just think of the trucker who assumes (according to his nuvi) that the overpass he's about to go under will have enough clearance for his rig, but then doesn't. |

Garmin re-intruduces a trucker friendly unit, after getting rid of truck/heavy vehicle mode from the nuvi's (was a vehicle type for the nuvi 3xx and 6xx series)
In addition to the co-pilot that is already out, The goodyear GY500X model should be coming out soon from what i can recall and it too will be a trucker oriented GPS.
One thing that wories me, is that the these trucker gpses seem to be made for the USA and not for canada (Truck data only available in the lower 48 U.S. states) In all cases looks like things are getting better for truckers |

i was told somewhere in the summer of 2008 that Garmin would release a truck navigation in the beginning of 2009. then on 29th of december i was told that the truck navigation was postponed and that they were planning to release a UK only unit around may 2009 and a European unit at the end of 2009.
because it was just vague inside information, i never posted this because i didn't have any info but this |

| If this data is stored in City Navigator maps and no special map needed, I do not see why Garmin could add this to all GPS, instead of making yet another model. |
Previously owned : GPS "eTrex Yellow" "GPSmap 76S" "GPSMap 60CS" "GPSMAP 60CSx" "Nüvi 660" Unit I have now :"Nüvi 760 EU" "Nüvi 765" "Edge 305" "Colorado 300" |

| They probably could but why would anybody not driving a truck care if there was a low bridge on their route or want to enter the dimensions of their vehicle as part of the setup. With the exception of maybe keeping off some narrow road somewhere, IMO it is far better to have a GPS specifically geared for trucks than to simply stick all this extra stuff on my automobile GPS. |

Not sure that the "road's truck data" are store in the map ! It can be a separe set of map informtion, such as the 3D Building Data for 3D Nuvis 765. Having additional data store in a separate set, may help manage license and other extra costs.
Form the screen capture, no one may be sure that these extra "truck data" are mapping data; it's closely looking like only a set of specific POIs with proximity alerts. Nothing to due with any advance drouting capabilities.
We have to wait for the first demo to have a better idea of what it is made of !

| Wow...that's a -curved- overpass with a height of 9'. But where is that measurement taken? From the center of the road or from the far right side of the road to the top? |

The article says the bus is 12' tall and Google shows common bus heights of 11' 7". Looking at the 10-wheeled "go/no-go gauge" [g], I'd say it's 9' at the top of the curve.
If you haven't clicked on the link, note that the bus company is blaming a Garmin GPS for the mess. I guess the bus had no windshield or the driver couldn't read [sigh].
Here's my favorite quote from a Garmin spokesman: "Stoplights aren't in our databases, either, but you're still expected to stop for stoplights."
