I'm very new to Garmin GPS maps. I have been reading all i can't but i still can not achieve what i need.

Basically, i want to have "Garmin's USA 2009" maps, and "mapear project's" Argentina/Uruguay/Chile/Paraguay maps (those are free).

So I have a C330. It came with USA 2008 maps, so i got the 2009 maps.

I used MapSource 6.15.3 to install the map on my SD card.

Problem was that when i went to see maps information, my c330 would show i have 2008 and 2009 maps.

So i followed a procedure that made me replace the internal gmapprom.img with one from panama. That worked, and now i have this "panama" map on my c330.

So then i tried renaming the usa 2009 image file GMAPSUPP.IMG to usa2009.img and the mapear GMAPSUPP.IMG to mapear.img and copied both to the SD's garmin forlder.

But my c330 would not recognize any of the imgs as maps. Only if i rename either of the maps back to GMAPSUPP.IMG it gets recognized. I even tried having GMAPSUPP.IMG and GMAPSUP2.IMG, but only GMAPSUPP.IMG would be seen as a map.

Why is this? How can i have both on my SD card? Or seeing how the mapear image is 150 MB, and supposedly the c330 can handle up to 900MB, can i write it to the c330 internal memory using the same procedure i used for the panama image? If it is possible, do i use the image file i have on the SD card with the procedure i used to image the internal c330 mem with the panama image?

If not, what do i have to do to have the usa 2009 maps and the mapear maps on the c330?

Last, why can't i access my c330 as a drive unit under windows?

Thanks.

edit 2: i know i can just send all maps together to the device, but that takes a lot of time, and if tomorrow i have another map to add, i don't want to re-create the image file.

I don't know about the C3xx series but on the nuvi series, your main mapset is always named gmapprom.img. I have no idea if you can have a secondary mapset on the c3xx series unit itself but going by what you've stated in your post, you can in fact have a secondary mapset on the c3xx's SD Card named gmapsupp.img.

Going by this information, your two mapsets should be named in the following way:
Main mapset (City Navigator 2009 maps) on C3xx: gmapprom.img (in the x:/Garmin folder)
Secondary mapset on C3xx SD Card (Panama maps): gmapsupp.img (in the x:/Garmin folder)

You can only have one mapset on the SD Card and that needs to be named gmapsupp.img

See the following topic for mapset naming conventions:

http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=120770

Note that in it's current form as I've written & tested it, the topic applies only to the nuvi units I've listed but may work for other units as well but I have not tested it for others.

nüvi 3490LMT, nüvi 3790LMT, nüvi 765T, nüvi 855, nüvi 760, nüvi 750

Problem is that i can not install the CN2009 maps on the c330 internal memory, somehow mapsource won't let me, so i have all on the SD card, and the panama maps (which i don't need) on the internal memory.

So i was wondering, since the MAPEAR maps are 150MB, can i transfer the image i have already send to the SD card to the internal memory, using the technique described here? http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=118642

Yes, you CAN copy your Mapear Argentina maps to the internal memory of your StreetPilot C330, over-writing the Panama map in the process. (This procedure assumes you are using Windows XP. Other operating systems might work, but I have no experience running this procedure with anything other than Windows XP.)

Before you go much further, I recommend three things:

1) Confirm that you have MapSource installed on your PC (normally in the C:\Garmin folder).

2) Confirm that you have WebUpdater installed on your PC (normally in the C:\Garmin\WebUpdater\ folder). If not, download here: http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-27

3) Go get the Sendmap20 archive and extract the executable (sendmap20.exe) to your C:\Garmin\ folder. You'll only need the executable; don't bother with the rest of the files in the archive. Download here: http://www.cgpsmapper.com/download/sendmap20.zip

If you have the Mapear Argentina maps installed on your PC in MapSource, simply select all the tiles you want (probably all of them) and click Transfer > Send to Device. The next menu that pops up allows you to select the destination for the new map file you're creating. I recommend that you choose an SD card or a thumb (flash) drive as your file's destination. (Do NOT use the SD card that your Garmin USA 2009 maps are installed on!!!) MapSource will create a GARMIN folder on the SD card or thumb (flash) drive and place your new gmapsupp.img file inside it.

Once created, copy the file to your C:\GARMIN\ folder and re-name it to gmapprom.img

Next, right-click on an unused area of your desktop; a small menu will open; select New > Text Document. This, as you might imagine, creates a new, but empty, text file right there on your desktop. Double-click it; it will open up in NotePad. Copy and paste the following lines of text into it (it's only 2 lines, though the 2nd is a long one and may look "wrapped around" on your display)...

C:\Garmin\sendmap20.exe -e
C:\Garmin\WebUpdater\WebUpdater.exe /upload_file rgn=49 path=C:\Garmin\gmapprom.img -autorun usb /i

... then click File > Save then close it with File > Exit. Once you've done this, re-name the file to C330_Update.BAT
And NO, UPPER CASE / lower case doesn't matter! If you like, call it c330_update.bat ; I don't care WHAT you call it, as long as it ends with .bat

OK, you're ready to go! When you double-click your new C330_Update.BAT file, a command-line window will open on your desktop and the sendmap20 program will erase any supplementary mapset you have installed in your C330 (Panama, perhaps?). Once that's done... only a few seconds... Garmin's WebUpdater program will erase your old primary mapset, then proceed to copy your newly-created gmapprom.img file into the C330 as your new primary mapset. This will take a while, so go have something cold to drink. When the process is completed, you'll have your new Mapear Argentina maps loaded into internal memory. Your Garmin North America 2009 maps will continue to "live" on the SD card where they've always been, and you'll simply leave them plugged into the SD card slot on your C330. Don't attempt to upload them into the internal memory of your C330; they're too big to fit. You can do it if you split the mapset into two pieces, leaving part of it on your SD card, but if you've already got the entire NA mapset on SD card, why bother?

Thanks blankman.

Only one more question. I replaced the original usa 2008 map by following YOUR instructions on this post: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=118642

On that post, there was no mention of sendmap20.exe, and the bat file only included the webupdater.exe line.

C:\Garmin\WebUpdater\WebUpdater.exe /upload_file rgn=49 path=C:\Garmin\gmapprom.img -autorun usb /i

So, out of curiosity, why is it that i need to first run the sendmap20.exe?

Thanks a lot.

You probably don't need to use the sendmap20 application at all. Let me explain why.

A Garmin GPS receiver (GPSr) generally contains a primary map image (the mapset it came with from the factory) and, if you've choosen to add it, a supplementary map image, which is installed using Garmin's MapSource application. The primary mapset is generally named gmapprom.img and is contained within the GPSr's Garmin folder -- if, that is, the GPSr shows up as a drive on your PC. The supplementary image, generally named gmapsupp.img, is the mapset that is written to the GPSr by MapSource whenever you send any additional maps to the unit. Whenever you send a new supplementary mapset to the unit, the new gmapsupp.img file overwrites any existing gmapsupp.img file, if present.

With the Nuvi line, you can drag and drop these files back and forth from your GPSr unit and your PC all day long, as long as they are unlocked for your GPSr, or if they don't require Garmin's unlock codes; example: Garmin's TOPO U.S. 2008 does not require an unlock code.

That's all well and good for the Nuvi line, but some other Garmin GPSr units, such as the StreetPilot C330, StreetPilot C340, StreetPilot 2620, StreetPilot 2720 -- and others -- do NOT show up as drives in Windows. You can't "drag and drop" image files between them and your computer, like you can with the Nuvis. You can't delete a large supplementary mapset to make room for a new primary mapset, at least not as easily as you can with the Nuvi units.

So what do you do to change the primary mapset in one of these units? You use the procedure mentioned in the other thread. Why not use MapSource? You can use MapSource to write maps to the internal memory of the device, but MapSource will write ONLY a new supplementary mapset, not a primary mapset. This is meant as a protection to ensure that you don't accidentally overwrite your primary maps when all you intended to do was add supplementary maps.

Since newer mapsets from Garmin virtually always contain more data than the previous version, the available memory may -- or may not -- be enough to contain all the data in the new mapset. In the event you've written a supplementary mapset to your GPSr that uses up just about all of the remaining available space, you probably will NOT have enough space to replace your OLD PRIMARY MAPSET with your NEW PRIMARY MAPSET. The new one is larger than the old one, and the new one simply won't fit, even after you delete the old.

So what do you do? You delete not just the old primary mapset, but the supplementary mapset, as well. That's where the SENDMAP20 application's "erase maps" function come into play. Do you need to use that line (sendmap20.exe -e) in your batch file? Probably not. It's only function is to erase the old supplementary mapset, and you probably don't need to do that anyway. The command simply ensures that you have all possible space available to write your new primary mapset into. The old primary mapset is automatically overwritten with a new one by the WebUpdater application that is called in the script.

In other words...
... the line containing the sendmap20 instruction erases any supplementary maps....
... the line containing the WebUpdater instruction erases the old primary map and writes your new one

Got it? :)

Hi. Kwanbis

I read in the forum that you were able to replace the original map on the Garmin C330 with another map. In my case i have my own custom maps that i want to put on there. Can you please help me with some instructions on how this is done. I have been searching the net for weeks now and i know it can be done. Please help. THanks!!
