Introduction : The "company" (not clear whether the software is by PolNav or Finean) that makes the software offers a trial version of the software and full 2008 Navteq maps for free. The only difference between the free copy and the paid copy is the words "evaluation copy" on the screen. The maps are the same, and as far as I can tell the program runs exactly the same. I think the software itself is inexpensive to purchase, but it runs amazingly well on my mio c320 and c520. I have also had reports that it runs well on the c230.... so it should also run well on c220's and c250's. I have been using it for weeks. My evaluation goes like this:

Pros:
1. Awesome looking- best looking software I have ever used on my mio
2. Decent routing- much better routing than miomap. My bet is it has a lot to do with the Navteq maps being more up to date in the US where I use it. For people only using miomap, you'll notice much better routing than what you currently have.
3. Voice is very clear on all my devices. It's one of the clearest and best sounding voices I have heard yet (although it doesn't have TTS)
4. 2008 Navteq maps. What can I say, Navteq is much better in the US and Canada than TeleAtlas is. I see all the roads that are otherwise missing on the maps I use with miomap.
5. It is the easiest software to get running on your device and runs off your SD card. In the settings menu you will find where you can set the baud rate and port settings. You'll need to know what these are for your device. You can experiment if you don't know.
6. Fast pick up of satellites. It is quick, much faster than miomap and some of the other softwares available.
7. More on easy installation. The program itself comes ready to go. The maps are already included and where they need to be. Just unrar and put on your SD card.
8. 3D building. Although they are not greatly detailed and are only in major cities, it does have them.
9. Picture imports. It allows you to import pictures that will show up on the map for your favorites or for cities or landmarks... nice little feature.

Cons:
1. No TTS
2. Although it has a great number of POI, you can't search for POI by name, only category. You do have the options (like with miomap) to choose where to search for the POI. It would be nice to be able to search for them by name though.
3. That's about it. The only other downside is the program and maps come in one huge file. I mean huge and their server isn't very fast. It will take you some time to download it. I started downloading it when I went to work and it did take me 10 hours. Others have reported that it only took them 6-8 hours... but that is still a long time. Worth it though (IMO)

I am going to post the links to the download. There you will find downloads for all over the world. You'll have to scroll through the menu to find your location. Canadians your maps are with the North America download.

The links :
- PolNav : http://220.112.38.86:133/DownLoanTrial.asp (via a "Polnav Trial" search on Google)
- Finean : http://www.finean.com/en/download.asp (requires free registration)

Directions:
1. Download the .rar file for your area
2. Unrar it on your computer
3. Copy the PolNav and all its contents onto your SD card.
4. Locate the \PoiNav\Default\Preferences.ini file that you need to edit to set your GPS port/baud rate, it's
5. You can run it various ways, if you are using an unlock you can create an icon that has a command path to the polnav_rm_demo.exe or you can just use windows explorer on your device to launch the .exe directly. Simple as that.

Where to buy : Finean v5 can be bought from Finean and PolNav from AT Imports UK, if you know of other places, you can post them in the topic.

Troubleshooting : Now, if for some reason the program starts with the menu icons in a different language than English or your native language I'll provide step by step instructions here. Although it should start in English if you are in the US and maybe in Italian if you are in Italy, etc. But just in case here is what you do:

1. When it loads to the map at start up, tap the screen to bring up the blue page with the different buttons.

2. At the bottom of the menu page there are 4 buttons. Hit the second button at the bottom (that is the settings button) although it might look like Japanese or something to you. We are gonna fix that.

3. A page will load with 3 buttons. Hit the big button top left (not on the black bar) This big button is the general setting button

4. Another menu page will load with 6 buttons. You want to hit the second button down on the left side. So, it on the left, the second button down. That is the language button.

5. Another page will load with two choices with little arrows. The top is text. You'll want to hit the little arrow changing it to English... then at the bottom of the page are two buttons. The one at the bottom left is "Apply" and the one of the bottom right is "Cancel". These are at the very bottom of the screen. Hit the one on the left. And now the text will be in English. Then you can go back to that same menu and change the voice.

6. When you hit "Apply" it will save that setting and load in English every from there on out.

I don't think people will need those instructions, I posted them just in case.

Enjoy!!

Thanks for sharing, I did some formatting and moved to the AIO forums since this should be of interest to all uses of WinCE systems. I also added Finean since its entirely similar apparently.

Will try it myself over the week-end!

It's all good. I appreciate you fixing the pictures. I still can't seem to upload pictures just to the forum. As for who makes it, I think that finean and polnav are the same companies, although I am not exactly for sure. That or Polnav is the name of the device it runs on and finean makes the software. Since most information I find on it is in a different language, it's hard for me to figure out which is which or who is who. As for the software, I think you'll like it. I don't see anyone else offering Navteq Q2 2008 maps for free. That alone is extremely nice of them. As for the software itself, it is extremely nice to look at. Hopefully more people will try it. I figure it is a nice alternative for people using miomap and/or software with dated maps.

Man.. is this program (software+map) for free? I clicked on the RAR file (0.99GB shown) for the US and it started download without asking for payment or anything.. I know the map is Q2 2008 Navteq, but it is hard to believe for free.. Do we regester/pay after the first use of the program, or something?

Instead of copying the PolNav and all its contents onto a SD card, I presume I can copy the same (PolNav and all its contents) onto the internal drive of the HTC Diamond, and launch PolNav from there, correct?

Should work, give it a try and let us know ;-)

As for being "for free", yes and no, as xtyler92 explained in the intro, there is a watermark, that nags you...

Interesting, looking at http://www.polstargps.com/ it appears that PolNav 5 is also available for eeePC Linux (Xandros). There's a PolNav Lite for low-level CPUs. Both version listed as optionally supporting TTS.

Yes, I was going to mention that in the news item, but since I couldn't see a demo version, I didn't want to confuse the readers ;-) Need to finish downloading the European version now!

I tried it also on my C520 and Moov 300 (both with MioPocket), installation to the SD card was essentially idiot proof. The only part requiring any intelligence was finding the .ini file that you need to edit to set your GPS port/baud rate {I'll preclude any questions - it's \PoiNav\Default\Preferences.ini)

The only voice option I recall is .wav, but there is a greyed out tab as if other types of voices (TTS) might be available. With even the cheapest GPS's now offering TTS (Rightway 200 for $70 on sale, see other topic in this Forum), I'd say that the TTS (if even offered yet) can't be too expensive. I think "free" for TTS is probably only a dream... but you never know their business model, we shall see.

I added your comment about the .ini to the guide above. Still haven't been able to copy the French version to my HTC Diamond PDAPhone, looks like it could be an issue on my computer as it unzips fine, will try with my laptop.

continued : no luck so far, when I launch Polnav France I get an error message "No Map Database Installed, System will shut down". Might have to go with the Euro version as no one has mentioned that problem.

What are you using to edit Preferences.ini ? It can be opened with notepad but it looks a bit odd (continuous line), not sure it would survive well to editing.

Well, thanks to xtyler92, I've been using this software for about a week on my C320. I have to admit that I love it! Very responsive, especially when going through the menus and entering address or POI info. Quickest software that I've used. No problems yet. Thanks xtyler92!!

Hmm, I wasn't aware of having to edit an .ini file to change the port and baud settings. I am using the full version though and it has that in the settings menu. I wasn't aware that it was different in the demo version (my apologies) I did use the demo version though and I kind of remember it also being in the settings menu there as well. Maybe under settings and then under the gps icon... I don't remember. That or maybe it's different for each region (meaning the program itself maybe different based on the area you are downloading from the download page). I don't want to revert back... ha and download the whole demo version all over again... as someone said it is huge and takes forever. I don't think I still have the demo version on any of my computers otherwise I would check. Hopefully people will like it, you can't beat it for free especially given the maps that come with it. The one thing people have told me is that the maps can become corrupt while downloading based on the slow speed and long time, and some people have had to download it again to get a good version of the maps. Hopefully most people aren't experiencing this. I know 2 states I have didn't seem to download right... Ohio and Tennessee. With the full version it will tell you if any of the map for each state is missing. I am missing some of both of those two states. I plan on downloading them again though with hopes of them getting fixed. I just wish they either did it by state or let you download just 1 of the 3 parts for the US instead of having to download all the parts. I do think that people will like it. I am with ljdavico and briang103, I really like it despite maybe some of the little missing features found on other softwares. Runs great, smooth, and fast. To me those are the most important features of any navigation program.

Downloaded the demo and it runs on a Mio 360 with no problems. The GPS port and baud rate are set in the software. Has anyone discovered how to load custom POIs?

Hmm, where I heard about this program people didn't have any problems with the European program. Gpspassion and Bivotar, I am not sure what is causing that problem. Does it download the same way as the North America version where the maps and program are already all put together and all you have to do is unrar it and pop it on an SD card? I wonder if it could be a voice issue. I will look further and see if people need to have a specific language loaded or not. Although that wouldn't make a lot of sense since I am sure they want people using the demo without having to do much of anything to get it working. I'll look though and if I discover anything I'll let you know.

Working now, but I had to download the European version, it seems the France and Italy versions are missing files.

Pretty impressed with the software, even though the FRA voice is closer to Canadian French than "Standard" French! I installed it on my old Mio C710 and it's very smooth indeed, reminds me a bit of iGO. I did get a screen at one point saying the program was going to exit as it was a demo version, but was able to relaunch it right away :
