UPDATED 20100318 : the nuvi 1xxx series have added capabilities, see details on page 3
+ denotes updated items 12/18/2008
* Note that this guide was written specifically for the nuvi 7x0/7x5 series but may also work on other nuvi units as well as other non-nuvi units such as the Colorado, Oregon and other Garmin hand-helds that have a disk-based file system.
You can have various mapsets loaded on your nuvi...not just the basemap and detail map. These mapsets all reside in the x:/Garmin folder on both the nuvi drive and the SD Card drive. The nuvi 7x0 can access up to six different mapsets (*one* on the SD Card). The nuvi 7x5 can access up to nine different mapsets (*one* on the SD Card)
Example:
Mapset 1. City Navigator North America NT 2009 = nuvi drive main detail mapset (gmapprom.img) Mapset 2. City Navigator Mexico NT 2008 = nuvi drive OEM detailed mapset (gmapoem.img) Mapset 3. US Topo 2008 = nuvi drive supplemental detailed mapset (gmapsupp.img) Mapset 4. City Navigator Europe NT 2009 = SD Card drive supplemental mapset (gmapsupp.img) Mapset 5. nuvi drive Basemap (gmapbmap.img)
*Note: Before fiddling with mapsets, make a backup of them first, especially gmapprom.img as this is your main detailed mapset.
Here's a list of the nuvi 7x0 & 7x5's mapset names & their relationship with the nuvi drive/SD Card:
Nuvi map naming convention ------------------------------------ 1. gmapprom.img: (7x0/7x5) nuvi drive only, (primary mapset)
2. gmapprom1.img: (7x0/7x5) nuvi drive only (secondary mapset) example: North American / European units
3. gmapsupp.img: (7x0/7x5) nuvi drive (supplemental mapset)
4. gmapsupp.img: (7x0/7x5) nuvi SD Card drive (supplemental mapset)
5. gmapoem.img: (7x0/7x5) nuvi drive only (OEM mapset), user accessible, cannot be unselected from the unit via Tools/Settings/Map/Map Info
*Note, when using the following default system maps as user maps, you'll naturally lose their default map attributes.
6. gmapbmap.img: (7x0/7x5) nuvi drive only (default basemap), configurable as a supplemental map; rename desired mapset to gmapbmap.img, NOT selectable and does NOT show up under installed maps (Tools/Settings/Map/Map Info) but may be visible under Tools/Settings/System/About/Basemap
7. gmaptz.img: (7x5 only) nuvi drive only (default 7x5 Timezone map), configurable as a supplemental map; rename desired mapset to gmaptz.img
8. gmap3d.img: (7x5 only) nuvi drive only (default 7x5 3D Buildings map), configurable as a supplemental map; rename desired mapset to gmap3d.img
+9. gmap3d1.img (7x5 only) nuvi drive only (secondary 7x5 3D Buildings map), configurable as a supplemental map; rename desired mapset to gmap3d1.img
Nuvi internal (diagnostic utility) OS map naming ----------------------------------------------------------- 7x0/7x5
1. PROM1 = gmapprom.img 2. PROM2 = gmapprom1.img 3. Suppmap1 = gmapsupp.img (nuvi drive only) 4. Suppmap = gmapsupp.img (SD Card drive only) 5. Dir DB = gmapoem.img 6. Basemap = gmapbmap.img
7x5 only
7. TZMap = gmaptz.img 8. 3DMap 1 = gmap3d.img +9. 3DMap 2 = gmap3d1.img |

Wow...
Where did you get this information? I've looked high and low and even spoke to Garmin tech support, with no results.
I've been wondering about a nüvi's naming convention for a long while, ever since I got my first unit back in October 2007.
It's too bad a SD card can accommodate only one map.
Thanks, SergZak. |

I have posted most of the same as this before, except the 7x5 information.
The bad thing is that you can not use all the naming on a SD card. It would be more easy to handle maps on the SD card this way. |

Lots of info in the forums, some posted by jotne, some posted by others. Some, I found myself by testing, renaming, testing, entering diagnostic mode and testing some more. However, nowhere was the info actually *complete* and in one topic, thus the guide to have everything in one place. I find this info useful, knowing that you can have so many different mapsets on the unit...and having multiple map products within a single mapset multiplies the possibilities even more. |

I did find the names by opening a firmware file and did a search for gmapsupp.img At the same location there was listed other name, so I did just try them out. |

Sorry, i am new but... does this mean that if you can get the files, you can just load the 3D img files to your nuvi?
if so, do those images still need to be unlocked?
i have a kenwood DNX5120, i dont know if the GPS on there is based on the streetpiolet series or nuvi so i wanna give it a try... |

The "(*one* on the SD Card)" must refer to how many map files (not mapsets) you can have on SD/microSD for a nuvi. A gmapsupp.img file can contain multiple MapSource mapsets. For example I have both Topo U.S. maps, and transparent elevation overlays for NT maps in the same gmapsupp.img. I can select or disable each separately in Map Info. That similarly works for handhelds that have all mapsets in one gmapsupp.img on microSD.
Of course for any locked MapSource maps, you need an unlock code for the specific GPS in MapSource before generating gmapsupp.img. Such files work for any GPS that MapSource had unlock codes for when the file was generated (or unlocked mapsets).
However, avoid tampering with maps pre-installed on microSD, because if you mess those up, they are gone. |

| Maps pre-installed on SD card are locked against the SD card ID, so you can use the SD card in any GPS and it will work, but you can not copy card from on SD card to another, or to the GPS. Maps will in fact work if you copy them to the GPS, and have the original SD card installed. |

Header of this thread be should be changed from [GUIDE] nuvi 7x0/7x5 mapset naming guide *updated* to [GUIDE] Garmin mapset naming guide *updated* Since this covers 99% of all Garmin GPS, and not only Nüvi Same with Colerado, 60Csx ++++ |

The topic title was used because the 7x0/7x5 series are the only units that I have tested and verified. I'd hate to mislead other users into thinking that their unit (or all Garmin units) would work and then have it NOT work. This is after all, the Garmin nuvi forum.
The topic body has been updated to reflect that other Garmin units -may- work.
If others here have luck on other units, they should feel free to post their results here. |

If i take the GMAP3D.img from another gps, can I just rename it to GMAPSUPP.img and put it into my gps? im pretty sure map will still need to be unlocked in order to work in mine but is that possible? if so, how can I get the unlock code for the GPS i am taking it from?
thanks |

Taking the code from GPS A and trying to use it in GPS B will not work and discussing it is a violation of the terms of use of this forum.

Must or does? This would pose a major problem as I plan to purchase a 765T unit sometime in the near future. Currently, I have several different mapsets on my Nuvi 350 SD Card. |

I'm struggling to understand the maps on my Nuvi(s). I had a 350 and recently purchased a 760. I'm trying to compare the files on the two as best i can to better understand. Prepare for a very noob comment: I wasn't aware one could have more than one map, isn't the road the road? How does one flip between maps on a device? How do the map updates update your map file? Or is is a brand new file?
I realize there's tons of questions, but if anyone has time to explain any part or send some good quality links (searching has just confused me more thus far), I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks! |

When you update your City Navigator maps the update program replaces the large gmapprom.img file with a new file of the same name. Basically the update overwrites the old map file. This is the same process for both your 350 and 760 and both use the same file name for the main map file.
You can use multiple maps on the Nuvi. Examples would be City Navigator North America and City Navigator Europe, Topo Maps, World Basemaps other than the one that is preinstalled on your Nuvi. Normally you would switch between them by selecting the one you want through the Tools - Settings - Map - Map Info screen. Tapping the checkbox beside a map entry will select or deselect the maps.
