NEWS - TOMTOM DUB1 Hynrid GPS : In-Dash and Mobile - SiRFstar GPS Chipset
The DUB1 seen from the back TomTom appear to be about to release a new and innovative GPS system, the DUB1 as it is called in the documents filed with the FCC is a hybrid system, both in-dash and mobile for use in other vehicles. Pictures and the User Manual can be found >> HERE << on the FCC's site.
It's possible that this might be the next trend for GPS systems, with mobile systems making their way to in-dash while keeping some flexibility. This type of concept could be used for the TomTom/Renault partnership that was announced in September and due to be unveiled at the Geneva car show next March.
While in-dash systems offer great integration obviously, you lose the ability to place the GPS in your line of sight on the dash for a quick glance without really losing sight of the road ahead. Not so if you have to look down.
One question is whether the DUB1 will have to be fitted in the factory or whether it will fit in the new 2DIN compartments now become more generalized.
Other items of note for the DUB1 :
1. Trafic information via a Bluetooth GPRS Phone, so the BT DUN profile is here unlike on the recent GO x40 units.
2. miniUSB connection to hoop up to a PC to add content (POIs, Speecams, Voices, etc...)
3. Control screen for the Car Stereo and iPod (optional cable)

4. Fitting the DUB1 in and replicator cover :

5. SiRF GPS Chipset (SiRFstarIII ?) like on the GO range :

Questions, comments ?

Toyota Australia have been selling something like this as an option for months (maybe 8 months) now. http://www.toyota.com.au/accessories/audio-navigation/satellitenavigation The trouble with this setup though is theft. This kind of defeats the purpose of a solidly fitted factory GPS system, which is very hard to steal. Now you have to take your GPS out of the car when you park it - just like a portable one. I wonder what Tomtom would charge for a replacement GPS section? More than a plain old Tomtom GO I bet!

From a friend at CES: "TomTom Eclipse AVN4430 still running v7 app, v7 map, no IQ Routes, no (apparently) integrated RDS-TMC (bluetooth traffic only)"
