POSTED 20081214 - sun4tzu has posted a step by step guide to install a purchased version of OCN8 (OEM version of iGo 8) on the Plenio -> >> details <<
I've just completed a 2500 mile round-trip using my Plenio VXA3000 7" GPS with GPS software other than what it was installed with.
First, use the C310Auto.zip file link found on this forum.
Second, get a spare SD card, and place the following directories on it: ~\cities ~\MobileNavigator
Copy the executable from the C310Auto.zip file into the ~\MobileNavigator directory, rename it MobileNavigator.exe.
Copy the .c31 file into the ~\MobileNavigator directory, and rename it MobileNavigagor.c31.
Place whatever other software you wish on the unit into appropriate directories on the SD card. One note, the SD card is named "SD MEMORY", not the usual "SDMMC". Edit the .c31 file appropriately, to call whatever programs you wish (cedesktop.exe, etc.).
I have not altered the unit in any other way, changed the registry, etc. It still comes up with the default menu, and touching the "Navigation" button on the screen executes the C310Auto.exe file (if you've followed the above directions correctly). The only side-effect is that once the C310Auto.exe file exits, you wind up with an on-screen error that the navigation program failed. It must expect some other error code returned other than what the c310auto.exe program ends with.
I have no idea if the unit can be connected to ActiveSync (haven't tried it yet), or altered in other ways for other purposes. I simply wanted software other than what the unit came with (the Smart2Go software is - yech!).
Anyway, just wanted to let others know it can be done - easily. Don't ask for other details - install your own legally obtained software. But it can be done.
I also have Delorme SA 2009, which I will attempt to install via ActiveSync, if ActiveSync will work. This software has been problematic on another GPS (the Holux GPSMile52+), as necessary DLLs, etc., aren't there, and I haven't stumbled on the right combination of other replacement DLLs to make it work. I've successfully used this software on an IPaq 3800 with WM2003, so it seems to be a case of just finding the right DLL combination(s). |

tundrwd,
Hi. I tryed but it gave me error #2. Which is I think file not found.
Can you, please, clarify the script file.
Let's say I have a program installed in the INST folder in the root of the SD card. My line in the sript is:
call \SD MEMORY\INST\program.exe
Is it correct? Because it does not appear to work.
The original .c31 file has also few registry modifications. I assumed these are not required and commented them out. Is it correct too?
Thanks |

I made no registry modifications at all.
Just renamed c310auto.exe, and the corresponding script.
Script calls program as you have described. I'll look at my script tonite and post a copy of it. Just the one line to call the correct program. |

Here's the basic layout of the SD card image:
+-cities +-<yoursoftwaredirhere> +-MobileNavigator + MobileNavigator.exe (renamed c310auto.exe) + MobileNavigator.c31 (renamed c310auto.c31)
Contents of MobileNavigator.c31: ============= start of file ============ call "\SD MEMORY\<yoursoftwaredirhere>\<yourprogramnamehere.exe>"
exit ============= end of file ============ That's it...

| It gives me different error now (193). So I guess I am on the right way. I did not have quotes in the script originally. Thanks |

I plan to try the C31 software soon. I was wondering if anyone had noticed the rubber plug on the botton right side. It covers a 18 pin connector that looks like the type of connector used on some smartphones and old pcmcia ethernet cards for the dongle connection. Sure would like to know what it's use. I took the 4 screws out of the case and removed the back. The screew side has 2 ribbon cables to the main pc board. I didn't take the main pc board out to look at the componets yet. I did view some of my pictures on the Plenio and it seems like it doesn't handle pictures in formats other than the screen default Res very well. I'd sure like better maps as my first trip around my town left out streets that had been their for many years. Seems like their aren't any hardware hacks for this unit. Larry

I also had #193 error with c310auto.31 (renamed to MobileNavigator.c31 of course). I gave up and downloaded ceDesktop.exe and rename it to MobileNavigator.exe
Now I have a taskbar when I click "Navigation", but all my GPS and other WinCE programs that run perfectly on Mio C310 and Navman icn520 can not run and always shows "xxx" is not a valid Windows CE application. I thought MioC310 is also Win CE.NET 4.2?
I wonder maybe firmware 1.62 has some kind of protection? Any thoughts? TIA. |

I have no idea. Mine works perfectly with firmware 1.62. The C310Auto I'm using is dated Jan 19, 2007 1:37pm, 15360 bytes. Might want to check on that. |

Thanks tundrwd.
I'm using the same version of C310auto, and the 139 error seems to be the same as "not a valid application" for Win CE.NET 4.2.
Out of curiosity, what other GPS software did you test? TIA. |

Are you getting the error from c310auto? Or will c310auto run cedesktop?

c310auto can run ceDesktop because ceDesktop works.
Almost all my WinCE programs (for example total commander cecmd) would get error #139 from c310auto script, or "not a valid windows ce application" from ceDesktop.
The only GPS software that passes the error code is igo dated May 30, 2006
UPDATE: Finally another GPS software that works is OCN8.0.0.44902 (Jul 2 2008)! |

| OCN 44902 worked for me out-of-the-box, not a single dll nor GAPI was required. |

I am also getting the #193 error, any clues.
Will this hack allow the running of the navigation while the media player runs in the background. I want to use this on my Honda Valkyrie which like the Goldwing allows for an aux audio input |

Question(s):
1. Is there a way to get the AAC/AC3 audio codec back into the VXA-3000 so there is audio for the MPEG 4? It seems like the .264 MPEG 4 is not recognized.
2. What is the best/smallest video/audio format that has worked for you folks out there on this unit? What do you use to convert to video/audio?
3.What is the larges SD Card that this sucker while be able to use fully?
Thank you.

| Error 193 most likely is caused by missing DLLs. One can google for "DLL pack" to find collections of DLLs to make applications work under stripped down CE OS. I did not try it yet, so it is just my guess. |

Not sure either, but a 193 might also refer to an incompatible binary. The Plenio VXA3000 is an ARM device (most of these are, but not all), so something compiled for MIPS, for instance, won't be compatible for an ARM.
Need to know the origin of the software being run, and if it is binary compatible with an ARM9 processor. |
