Hi all,

(This is re-posted from my thread at mp3Car.com.)

After looking at some of the Garmin MobilePC installation files, I noticed that the three ".gir" files are actually a sort of PNG image archive for what appear to be the icons and interface buttons, etc of the software.

To facilitate some re-skinning of the interface, I have documented what I know about the GIR file format. I have also written a file splitter which will split out all of the PNG files from the GIR file to help those who might want to have a look. The program will also recombine the PNG images into a GIR file using the log produced during the split.

The GIRSplit program is located here.
The file format documentation can be found here.
The splitter source code in C# is also included here for those interested.

GIRSplit requires .NET 2.0 and is a simple command-line application.

Drag and drop a GIR file onto GIRSplit.exe and it will be split out into a number of PNG files and a log file.
Drag and drop a LOG file onto GIRSplit.exe and it will recombine the PNG files and log file data into a GIR file.

I hope this helps someone get a start on re-skinning the MobilePC interface.

I know this is a three year old thread, but if pbarrette is still around here - thanks for this program!

I've been setting up an HP Slate 500 with MobilePC and this has allowed me to make it much better suited to my use. I primarily use my own topo maps and not City Navigator, so I want to have as much screen space as possible devoted to the map.

Here's my first try at a mod - I'm sure I will tweak other things in the future. It's too bad Garmin has dropped this program, because on my Slate it's really the most responsive device I've ever used with garmin format maps. Zooming, scrolling and tracking are noriceably faster than my Oregon or Nuvi 3790.

BTW, if anyone wants to try this themselves, the version linked to above is only for MobilePC 5.00.60 (probably older versions too). Many people feel this is the most stable version and have downgraded to it.

If you look at the mp3Car thread linked to above, on the third page you will see that someone else has updated the program to work with MobilePC 5.00.70. That version will NOT work with 5.00.60 however.

Anyway, thanks again pbarrette - wherever you are.

Here's the standard layout:

And this is my modded version:

Nothing wrong with updating a good thread even three years down the road, looking good indeed!
