TESTING - TOMTOM GO 740/940 LIVE
LIVE (HD Traffic, Google Search, TT PLUS) - IQ Routes v2 - Active Car Holder

UPDATED 20090109 - TomTom announced at the CES 2009 show that the 940 would soon be launched in the US...without "HD Traffic" though, just the usual "TomTom Traffic" via GPRS, except it will now be a breeze to use it, no longer reqired to use a Bluetooth phone and have a data plan. On top of that it comes with a one-year prepaid subscription.

UPDATED 20081114 - The TomTom GO 940 LIVE connected GPS has come in for testing, first pictures and comments on page 2, feel free if you have any questions.
UPDATED 20081010 - discovered the GO x40 in Amsterdam last week and will be previewing it, starting with the new active mount, see details on page 2
UPDATED BY GPSPASSION 20080902 : After the TomTom GO in 2004, the GO x00s (300/500/700) in 2005, the GO x10s (510/710/910) in 2006, the GO x20s (520/720/920) in 2007 and the GO x30s (530/730/930) earlier this yera, here comes the sixth generation of TomTom GO systems, the x40s LIVE with the 540, 740 and 940 models, see the TomTom website for the press release. At this point they are only announced in a few European countries (Holland, UK, Germany, France, Switzerland) as they require a phone carrier partner due to their "always connected" nature. TomTom recently cleared the HD Traffic receiver with the FCC so availability in the US should be next.

The groundbreaking feature on the x40 series is the built-in GPRS module with its SIM card to allow the device to be always connected to the network and the LIVE services : HD Traffic, Google Local Search, Live speedcam alerts, notably. This will come at a cost though, €10 per month after a three month trial period so the service will have to prove itself compared to the bundled RDS Traffic service. The x40s are also getting IQ Routes v2 (daily granularity in 5 minute increments), voice control and an active car holder.

"TomTom GO 940 LIVE - Includes TomTom HD Traffic Receiver
Live Services Includes a three-month trial of the following LIVE services: HD Traffic, Safety alerts, Fuel prices, QuickGPSfix, local search with Google search engine and Weather. After a three-month trial you choose whether to continue using LIVE services at an affordable cost"

NOTE BY GPSPASSION - The GO 940 Live appears to be a GO 930 with an HD Traffic Receiver that includes a full GPRS module and SIM card. So far HD Traffic has been avialable in Holland with the UK and Germany announced in 2008 and France in 2009. The USA should come soon too as the HD Traffic receiver has been cleared by the FCC.

Interesting, I added pics and comments to your message.

I wonder whether TomTom will release it in countries where HD Traffic is not yet available but where it would enable people to use TomTom's connected services and particularly Google Search. Right not these services (other than Google Search) are accessible via a Bluetooth Phone with GPRS.

Not for the US yet.

TomTom Sets New Standard for Navigation Industry

© Business Wire 2008
2008-08-28 14:51:02 -

www.tomtom.com/ - TomTom Richard Piekaar +31 20 757 5194 ir@tomtom.com TomTom (AEX:TOM2), the world's leading navigation solutions provider, today presents its most innovative product yet. The connected TomTom GO x40 LIVE delivers dynamic navigation and route guidance that continuously adapts to changing road conditions and always gives drivers the fastest route to a destination.

The three models of the TomTom GO x40 LIVE series come with a new and extended version of TomTom's unique IQ Routes(TM) technology. TomTom IQ Routes(TM) is now based on historical travel time information for every road, specified for every day of the week at five minute intervals.

The new TomTom GO x40 LIVE automatically connects to TomTom's exclusive High Definition (HD) Traffic service for the most accurate and detailed live traffic information. It will now be available in Germany, UK, France and Switzerland for the first time, in addition to the Netherlands, where the service was introduced at the end of 2007. When the measured traffic conditions differ from the expected flow rates, the TomTom GO x40 LIVE automatically calculates a better alternative route if one is available. The expected time of arrival will be adjusted accordingly.

Launch of TomTom LIVE Services

The TomTom GO x40 LIVE series has plug & play connectivity built in and comes with a number of valuable information services for motorists.

-- Superior and unique TomTom High Definition Traffic(TM) service for the most accurate and current traffic information en route, now available for the first time in Germany, UK, France, Switzerland as well as in the Netherlands.

-- TomTom Safety Alerts including real-time safety camera reporting and sharing, means users can keep each other informed about mobile safety cameras.

-- TomTom Fuel Prices: up-to-date fuel price information guides you to the cheapest fuel stations along users' routes or in their area.

-- TomTom unlocks the power of online Local Search with Google. It turns search results into a destination with the press of a button. This gives users access to millions of locations.

"The introduction of the new TomTom GO x40 LIVE series and LIVE Services mark a fundamental breakthrough in the quality and functionality of navigation devices and how people will use them," says Harold Goddijn, TomTom's chief executive officer. "We don't want our customers to spend time in traffic if they don't have to. With the new TomTom GO x40 LIVE we provide drivers with the best routing information available and we help them to make intelligent decisions that save time and money, putting them back in control."

"Through the introduction of TomTom LIVE Services we are also evolving from a pure PND manufacturer to a provider of state-of-the-art routing information," Goddijn adds. "We believe that through those innovations we can enhance the lives of millions".

TomTom GO x40 LIVE range

The new TomTom GO x40 LIVE series features three models; the TomTom GO 940 LIVE, TomTom GO 740 LIVE and TomTom GO 540 LIVE*. It comes with an iconic flat design and new, high-quality user-interface with optimised icons for even easier navigation through the device menu.

All products come with TomTom's wide range of award-winning navigation features, including IQ Routes, HD Traffic as part of LIVE Services and TomTom Map Share - TomTom's unique map improvement technology. The improved advanced lane guidance feature now gives drivers clear instructions of complex junctions.

The new Active Dock incorporates a system connector, so the device can be semi-integrated into the car while ensuring easy docking and charging.

With safety in mind, the TomTom GO LIVE series now also features voice command and control in addition to existing safety options, providing customers with more safety features than any other navigation device. For the first time users can plan a route or make a phone call by using their voice. Over 100 tasks can be activated by voice, so drivers can keep their eyes focused on the road ahead.

The TomTom GO x40 LIVE series comes with a full range of accessories to match the design and finish of the new range.

Availability and price

TomTom LIVE Services and TomTom GO x40 LIVE series will be available in Germany, the UK, France, Netherlands and Switzerland from Autumn 2008. The TomTom GO x40 LIVE series has a recommended retail price from 349 euros. A free three months trial period for TomTom LIVE Services is included. Afterwards users can easily register to a monthly, flat-fee subscription of 9.95 euros with no hidden costs, so they continue to receive all LIVE Services directly into their car.

NOTES FOR EDITORS:

*Availability and price of the TomTom GO x40 LIVE series and TomTom LIVE services may differ per country. Some LIVE Services are country specific.

Thanks for reposting.

So it seems like the GPRS module is included in the device now or in the active car holder. No external HD receiver.

Not for the US, true, but oddly enough Fuel Prices are only available in the US as per the European press releases ;-)

The 940 has US maps on it. I wonder if it could be popped open to put an AT&T gophone sim in it here. I suspect an announcement saying they have an agreement with AT&T in place for HD Traffic soon. Maybe they'll sell these here before that there are a lot of nice features on this if they work right. Dynamic traffic routing is something that Dash doesn't have but I suspect it is not that easy to do so whether it works well is another story.

Will you be able to test this?

There are some good screenshots here:

I like the new mount.

I'm 99% sure the connectivity hardware is all in the active mount. No way the services can port backwards if so.

The GPRS hardware might well be in the mount but not for compatibility reasons. The HD Traffic receiver could certainly do the job on the x20 and x30 models, it does seem at this point like TomTom will be restricting the "LIVE" services to the x40 Live models only, at least in Europe.

On the other hand, the reduced battery life of "up to 3 hours" could indicate that the GPRS module is indeed on board (more battery drain or smaller battery to make room for the extra hardware) versus the "up to 5 hours" of the x20/x30 series...then again, the actual battery life of the x20/x30 models was 2.5 hours so maybe it's just an "adjustment" !

Excellent point on noting the battery figures. Your comment on that made me check around a bit more. That leftover 1% from my surety? That's the one that wins. You're correct that the sim is in fact in the device, not the mount. In that case they certainly could have made it a bit more attractive, don't you think?

As more validation that the mount supplies power only, TomTom will also have a 640 (odd) that has no active mount. Considered entry level with a reduced country coveraage as well.

640 ? Strange the 540 has the active mount too apparently, are you maybe confusing it with the 630 that was announced yeterday too and that is an "el cheapo" x30 ?

Did you find pictures confirming the SIM was inside the device ?

I just got confirmation from my contact at TomTom that the GPRS module was indeed included and that the SIM card was in fact "non-removable".

They were kind enough to answer the other questions I had :
1. IQ Routes v2 goes with the maps so should be available to other devices, no date yet, but possibly with a map update
2. Voice control and command will remain an x40 exclusive for the time being
3. The LIVE services will become available to all devices equipped with the HD Traffic receivers, not only the x40 range. That's nice for the legacy devices

GPSPassion, I really should have that second cup before posting. It was early, but still no excuse. You are of course correct. Had I read the email a bit more carefully I would have noted the "3" rather than a "4". Your source may be much more reliable than mine who indicates I was not correct in surmising the connectivity (sim/etc) was in the mount. Are you saying the sim actually is in the active mount?

I do appreciate being humbled a bit. It teaches a very good lesson to confirm information with at least one additional "reliable" source when possible.

No that's fine, information goes around fast these days and we all have problems keeping up, bouncing information off of other forum members is a good way to build our common knowledge that benefits everyone. In exchange, feel free to start a topic on the 630 in the TomTom section of the forums ;-)

So yes, let me clarify, I was told by TomTom that the GPRS module was inside the x40 device and the SIM card is non-removable (possibly hard-wired), so that answers offthegrid's SIM card change question!

Talking about the mount here is nice picture from trustedreviews.com

So what is your guess on why the active mount appears so bulky, especially in comparison thee the nuvi 7x0 active mount. Necessary for component containment or just aestetics.

At this opint I really have no idea and will reserve judgment until I can test one. Hopefully they've reinstated the audio out/mic in/TMC in/power in combo of the x10 series, so that takes a bit of space.

Nice about the backwards compatibility that means there are literally muti millions of potential traffic probes in the US just waiting to have the adapter sold here. The Google search and the detailed real time traffic will be a powerful incentive to buy the adapter. If it stays the way it is buying the adapter gives either a free year or 6 months (can't remember which) of the service as opposed to 3 when buying the integrated unit.

I can't wait.

I wonder why they can't make these devices connect to the internet for Google search and traffic using bluetooth to your smartphone's connection instead of having their own connection and monthly fee?
If you are already paying for data on your smartphone, you are not going to want to pay a permanent monthly fee for the little bit of data the gps will use for traffic and very occasional google searches you might do on the gps.

Not sure if you've tried it, but configuring a modem connection over Bluetooth can be a nightmare from a PC, let alone a GPS, even for very experienced mobile users like myself, case in point, I can't get my 930 to get a data connection using any of my numerous phones, WM, Nokia, etc...no one has been able to figure out why. Almost as bad with the MioMoov 370, that one works with my Nokia phone for some reason. Some phones don't have a BT DUN profile (iPhone), people don't have a tethering option , etc...

For connected devices to pick up any kind of market share having the data connection built-in is an absolute must for the user experience to be acceptable and for companies to be able to support them. I don't think the actual bandwidth costs much as they would be buying it bulk. Oh and in the case of TomTom they NEED to control the data connection to be able to enrich their HD Traffic feed.
