Here is how to fix the 760 when you get the dreaded, system software missing. The hardest part is getting it to boot in USB mode. #1. Turn off unit and unplug #2. Put your finger in the middle of the screen.(not in a corner) #3. Slide the power button to the locked(right) position #4. While the unit is off, and holding finger in the middle, plug in the usb cable. #5. After downloading the firmware file from Garmin, click it to expand it. #6. Drag the rgn file onto the updater file, which should transfer the firmware to the unit. #7. Keep this file, as your firmware upgrade backup.
These are the steps that Garmin will walk you through, just trying to save people the time on hold.
Hope this helps. 760ROCKS!!! -Dan

| Wait, there's a firmware update for my nuvi 760??? Never heard this or had the SYSTEM SOFTWARE MISSING problem you are describing. Should I just wait and see? I haven't been following a lot of new threads lately. |

Thanks, I will check those out. But are you saying to update the firmware even if you don't have the aforementioned "software missing" or other corrected issues they mention?
Also, it reads: System requirements:
1. IBM-compatible PC running Windows 2000 or later operating system and an available USB port.
Does this mean not updateable on a Mac or is this just an oversight on their part? With Web Updater you can update on either platform. |

| 3.1 is a simple firmware update that didn't address many issues. A few reports that it has CAUSED issues tho. My personal advice would be just to skip this one. No advantage to update that I can see. |

| Yeah I agree, especially if you're not having any issues in the first place. I would say about 50% of the time a supposed "fix" or update screws something else up. |

As far as I'm concerned the System Software Missing is not particularly connected to any firmware issue and 3.1 doesn't deal with it directly although Garmin almost always fix issues that aren't listed in the change log for an update.
The link to the download is for an self extracting archive EXE file which I have no idea about running on a Mac. Using Webupdater or your Intel Mac in PC mode should work fine to update however. |

The archive will open on a Mac and you can indeed update manually using the files contained in it. See the FAQ for detailed instructions.

Yes, that is how I have updated previously. I was just making sure that this update wasn't somehow different. This is the only time I can remember using an .exe file on a Mac (not an Intel Mac running Boot Camp or Parallels, etc). But why does Garmin explicitly say it is for a machine running Windows and mention nothing about Mac? They are more popular than ever now.
Also, I just realized I do indeed have an issue. The screen freezes and does not respond to further taps when I am setting a route with multiple destinations or even just adding a via point.... right upon tapping GO the second time to begin is when it does not respond. I just got home from it doing this most of the drive. Has anyone else experienced this? |

Thanks a lot... I'm glad I found this thread..
I successfully downgraded 4.00 back to 2.50, to 2.30 and then updated to 3.10 and back to be one happy nuvi 760 user with Hidden track log (that I accidentally turned off after upgraded to 4.00 and cannot downgraded using normal gupdate.gcd method)...
Thanks again...
UPDATE: DO NOT DOWNGRADE Nuvi 760 from 4.00 using the files in this thread or you WILL lose bluetooth functionality and have to ship the unit back to Garmin for servicing. |

| Where does one get the rgn file? Also you said to drag it onto the "update" file. Could you please explain which file that is? Is it the updater program or the GUPDATE.GCD file. Once you do that, I am not completely sure I understand the rest of the steps involved. Could you explain in a little more detail. Thanks. |

I tried the "updater" from the dvoropaev post above on 4 different machines and it does NOT see the Nuvi as a USB device even though using "explorer" it shows up fine. Any idea on how to get that updater to see the usb nuvi?

Run update and select usb then follow these instructions while the program is open.
#1. Turn off unit and unplug #2. Put your finger in the middle of the screen.(not in a corner) #3. Slide the power button to the locked(right) position #4. While the unit is off, and holding finger in the middle, plug in the usb cable.
