Apple's store has recently listed several new programs which use the iPhone 3g's internal GPS. I just got an iPhone but haven't tried any of these yet. Judging from the reviews posted at the app store however, there are some issues like battery drain and heat buildup if used continuously.
As of today the app store lists 47 programs in the Navigation category. Here are a few that look interesting. Still nothing like a full featured GPS for auto navigation yet:

Path Tracker: http://pathtracks.com/
Insta Mapper GPS Tracker: http://www.instamapper.com/

We already had a topic for GPS on the iPhone, but why not have a summary topic with all the GPS apps that is kept up to date ;-)
I've been using GPS Tracker and it works quite well, they mention 5 second updates but so far I haven't managed to do better than 30 seconds, still pretty good. |

I have been playing with Google Earth on my iPhone for the past few days and must say that I'm really impressed. The user interface is great - the multi-touch screen is a natural for this application - even easier to navigate around than on the full computer version. I have not had any real stability issues myself, although others have reported some problems in the app store reviews.
Looks like this is going to let most of the air out of Earthscape's paid iPhone app. But Earthscape does have a few additional features, including your own personal web space which is now included with the purchase. I think the Google interface is a little better than Earthscape's - for one thing, you can't control the tilt angle in Earthscape, it's either 2d or 3d. But I still like it, primarily because Google switched data providers in my area (New Jersey). They now have lower resolution imagery which has some real issues - there's a big "stripe" across the state that makes it look like the pictures were taken half at night! Earthscape is using the imagery which was previously on Google and was provided by the state.
Anyway, the iPhone version of Google Earth is a real winner, and it's hard to argue with the price also |

True ! How stable are you finding it though? It exits after a few minutes on my iPhone and one of my friend's has the same problem, no real pattern I could find.
A few new free GPS apps that have popped up on the appstore :
1. Everytrail from everytrail.com that lets you log and upload tracks and pictures online
2. MotionX GPSLite : some people are saying it's like having a Garmin in your iPhone ;-) It's certainly quite impressive but this version is limited to 3 waypoints, which is obviously not enough, a for pay version is coming apparently. |

| I have only played with Google Earth 4 or 5 times so far. But I probably spent somewhere between 5 to 20 minutes each time and have not yet seen a crash. My browsing has all been within something like a 200 mile radius of my home however. |

Good to hear, I'll try rebooting my iPhone before using it to see if I'm having memory related issues.
Forgot to mention a great tracking application yesterday, it's http://www.ilocalis.com/ - unfortunately it requires a jailbroken phone as the Appstore apparently has restrictions on that type of feature. It's pretty amazing because it works in the background by sending a position every X minutes and you can control the iPhone from their server (the iPhone connects every X minutes to the server to poll for messages or new settings). It works in the background unlike other apps like instamapper. It lacks track recording though. There is a 7 days trial period and then it's €5 per year, very reasonable if you need that type of feature.by |

This looks like a cool application: http://www.inavx.net/
I don't need marine navigation myself, but I like the concept of downloading raster maps for storage on the phone such that they can be used without a cell phone connection. Hopefully someone will expand this approach to USGS topo maps and satellite images!

Does GPS Tracker or Every Trail log data so you can use it with digicams instead of just the camera built into the iPhone 3G?
Do these apps. for the iPhone generally display data only on the iPhone or can the data they log be exported to a computer?
IOW, can it produce data which can be used on a Mac to embed the data for use in iPhoto, Google Earth, etc.?

| Yes, you can record a track but it's generally a bit clumsy because you have to upload it to their site and then download it on your computer. Keep in mind the iPhone doesn't stream NMEA data like the other GPS systems out there so you won't be getting one point every second. For geotagging you're probably better off getting a cheap standalone datalogger, like these. |

OK, so it's some kind of a HW limitation, not a lack of the software app. to log the data more frequently?
Or maybe an app. could let you manually touch a button each time you take a picture. Then later, desktop software should be able to match up the logged data points with the time code on the pics?
I was considering getting the Nikon P6000, which has the GPS integrated. But it's getting tepid reviews for the digicam performance.
It would be nice if an app. could make the iPhone reproduce the functionality of a $100 GPS logger but I guess battery life would be an issue. Also would have to be able to use it overseas without connecting at all to the mobile network, to avoid international roaming, both for voice and data, which can get prohibitively expensive. |

I thought BT747 was the Java software?
Is BT 747 also the name of a GPS logger model?
I see iBlue 747 is a model.

| XROAD recently released G-Map for iPhone; at present (12/17), only US West map is available in AppStore. Map size is 933MB, so should be easily accomodated on most iPhone 3G models. Interested to know any practical feedback on this new application. http://www.xroadgps.com/Maps/GMapforiPhone/tabid/2463/Default.aspx |

Welcome to the forums, is it really out though ? Also it seems it's a "local" Google Maps with some "bells and whistles", like the Junction View (see below) and optimized start time, but it doesn't provide live visual and voice guidance, likely due to the fact that the iPhone's GPS module can only be polled for a position, it doesn't provide a NMEA stream like dedicated GPS devices.
