S79 is Skyworks AS179-92 Antenna Switch - GaAs PHEMT.

PS. I know there is no SIRF chip. I had to put it into N200.

Actually not. There is a capacitor between the actual internal patch antenna and the pre-amp which provides DC isolation. Works just fine and is a very simple and easy solution. Replacing the switch is a more elegant solution and I recommend it if one is capable of performing it but I've owned 3 NUVI's and several in my family own them and none have ever needed to use an external antenna so the simple coax fix should suffice for most.

You seem to be confused, there is a capacitor between the internal antenna connection and the pre-amp. Stops the DC component perfectly fine if you simply jumper from the center pin of the external antenna jack to the center pin of the internal antenna. Having a DC component on the patch antenna won't hurt a thing. It's completely insulated.

Although I would normally be concerned about the RF effects on such an arrangement I see no difference in signal strengths before and after as indicated by the Nuvi's signal strength indicator in a before and after test. Again, it's an easy fix that just works.

For those that have the capability and tools to do tiny surface mount re-work, replacing the rf switch is the way to go but not necessary unless you are really concerned about having it work exactly as it was designed to.

I don't feel the need to have a debate on this. I simply offered this up as a simple fix for this common problem from someone who has actually implemented it and has been using the unit for 2 years with the fix in place.

Good luck to you all... I'm unsubscribing from this topic.

Cheers,
Ron

I received (2) orders of the RF switch.

(50) pcs of the Skyworks part.
(50) pcs of the California Eastern Laboratories compatible part.

If it is not a secret... can you tell me where you order these parts.
I do Garmin repairs here in Poland but it is very hard to get some parts here.
Not many companies ship parts internatioanly :(

PS. Regards to Linear Technology and Pericom.

Thanks Ron,
I have tried the workaround that you described and it works perfectly. After I put it all back together I got full reception within 30 seconds....Brilliant. A good fix for people that do not have surface mount capabilities at hand or not wanting to pay the extortionate repair prices of Garmin.
Thanks a lot
Richard

Hey RHAINES! RECURRY?

Can you please seand some pic of what you did?
(or maybe you can use the excellent pic that POUCHX upload to show how to do it?)

Did you bridged pins 1 and 3 on the IC or used a coax cable (only center part?)to bridge from center pin of OA jack to internal antenna (where is the center pin of internal antenna?)

What type of cable did you used?

Sorry to bother you... need to fix mine GA****

THX !

Fixed !

1) Opened flip antenna (2 screws on top and carefully removed back plastic cap)

2) Carefully remove tin foil, it is glue and can be placed again on same place.

3) With the center part of a thin coax cable taken from an old mobile ext antenna (same cable as gps ext antenna) solder from center jack of ext antenna to int antenna, look picture attached.

4) Place tin foil on same place.

5) Carefully reinsert back plastic cap and screws.

THAT'S ALL, NOT VERY HARD TO SOLD WITH A MAGNIFING GLASS (sorry for my english!)

WORKING 100%

Similar "lost Satellite" problems with Nuvi 670. Did you get yours sorted?
